Storming The Castle

The last installment of Forever Evil: Blight saw the end to the actual Blight of the story.  The JLD fought over and over again, and in the end all it took was some kid who died, came back, turned into the collected sins of all mankind, and then turned into the Spirit of Redemption to stop him.  Still following?  So now that the big bad of the Dark characters is defeated, Constantine is on the hunt for Zatanna, and in last issue we saw the team infiltrate the magical HQ of the Crime Syndicate being run by Felix Faust and Nick Necro.  So on with the show.

Explain It!:

This issue begins with Constantine setting off a mystical booby trap, which makes him relive the the spell which killed him only to bring him back.  This kind of magic is like a night of drinking Irish whiskey and Canadian beer, it knocks you on your ass, and occasionally gets you naked.  But Constantine comes to fully clothed with only the JLD missing, well Nightmare Nurse is still there, I hope that doesn't seem too suspicious.

Constantine moves through the citadel, more sure of himself than ever.  Each trap that comes his way he counters with ease.  Until finally in the main room he finds the rest of the mages in the DCU hooked up to machines.  We got Black Orchid, Cassandra Craft, Enchantress, Papa Midnite, Blue Devil, Blackbriar Thorn, and Shade the Changing Man (About time.  I've been waiting to see Shade again since the first story arc of JLD.  Hopefully after this he'll come back to a title).  So after he see's all the Hogwarts alum, he confronts Nightmare Nurse and "magics" her down.  We find out that Nightmare Nurse has been Nick Necro since Constantine woke up, and he let Nick go on with the ruse just to see what he would do.  You'll remember Nick Necro as the guy Constantine stole his coat from, and like earlier in this title's run, he wants revenge.  Nick prattles on like he does, and Constantine either does a binding spell on Nick, or magically breaks his neck.  I'm not sure but if he shows up next issue I guess we'll know.  But Constantine's arrogance get's the better of him, while he's thinking he's the best mage around, Felix Faust sneaks up from behind and puts a whammy on him.

In the end Constantine is hooked up to a machine in front of Zatanna, and only hopes that his fellow JLD members will come to his rescue, but what he doesn't know and we find out is that the rest of the team are also hooked up to the magical nuke'em battery.  I didn't know where else to put this but the machine was a fail safe for the Crime Syndicate if the big scary that destroyed their world comes a callin'.  On with the next chapter!

Explain It!:

I like seeing the arrogance of Constantine again now that he's done with Blight, and back in his element.  He proves that he's the baddest (80's bad) mage around, and is back to selling out his team if it get's him what he wants.  We're moving right along with this story, and getting closer to the Crime Syndicate in the process  I can't wait to see where it all ends up.  Check it out.

7.5/10.
