Hello Nurse!

Last issue of Justice League Dark we explored what Nightmare Nurse really was, and how she possessed a woman named Alice Winter decades ago.  When Nightmare Nurse lost control of her host and was forced out she was able to send herself to "The Between", where she reached out to Constantine to try and help her reclaim her body.  Surprisingly Constantine agrees and the two head to the House of Mystery, but Zatanna isn't willing to let poor Alice Winter be possessed and controlled by a dark entity she doesn't truly trust.  In the end the JLD fight Constantine, and Zatanna put herself in the way of Nightmare Nurse reclaiming her body, which only means bad news for this issue because now Nightmare Nurse resides in the body of Zatanna.  Let's step into the House of Mystery and see if Nightmare Nurse simply gives the body back and everyone can be friends again, and maybe celebrate a job well done with a sleep over.  Sounds like a Teen Titans Go version of the JLD, anyway let's check it out.

Explain It!:

So like I said Nightmare Nurse is now possessing Zatanna, and unlike my positive spin on how things might have gone, Now that Nightmare Nurse feels the power that Zatanna wields, she doesn't want to give it up.  Yeah nobody's happy about this.  As you can imagine a fight ensues, and it all leads to Asa/Nightmare Nurse/Zatanna kicking the shit out of everyone.  That is until Constantine figures what the hell and opens a dangerous portal back to "The Between" which we found out last issue is a dimension with a consciousness, and wants to devour anything in it.  So yeah it's a dangerous portal, and Constantine plans on having it suck Asa out of Zatanna, and we all live happily ever after, but occasionally miss our Nightmare Nurse.  That would of been fine but the spell backfires and the portal sucks in the entire House of Mystery.

Now that the team are in "The Between" and completely screwed Nightmare Nurse releases Zatanna and we see that her form is that of a three headed demon dog from Ghostbusters.  With any luck the JLD will be able to defeat Gozer and she'll be able to turn into Rick Moranis.  It turns out that Nightmare Nurse is sorry for what she did to Zatanna, but once she was inside her... ha ha, she was intoxicated by her power.  So we're all friends again, but the team is still completely screwed.  Zatanna back in action commands the team to go out into the smokey void and distract the massive consciousness that wants nothing more to consume things and erase them from existence.  Maybe I'm just not the superhero type, but Zatanna can go to hell.  But the JLD team go out there anyway and do their best not to be consumed and keep the smoke monster from Lost occupied.

Well the team doesn't die, but Zatanna's plan to merge with the House of Mystery to open a portal out has failed, and we're back to being screwed.  Wait!  What's that?  Three Headed Dog Monster Nightmare Nurse is willing to keep "The Between" distracted, while Constantine merges with the House of Mystery with Zatanna to boost the power so everyone can go home?  The hell you say.  But before Nightmare Nurse can make the ultimate sacrifice to save her friends, Zatanna creates a image of Nightmare Nurse's soul out of the back of the three headed dog (yeah that's a bit weird), and gives her an intimate goodbye/thank you kiss.  Well that was unexpected.  So Nightmare Nurse says her goodbyes and heads out and fights back "The Between" with her healing powers, and the JLD and the House of Mystery escape.  When the team are gone Nightmare Nurse tells "The Between" that it can have her, and calls it father.  Man this issue is throwing curve balls all over the place.

Back in the physical realm we find out that Zatanna's kiss was a way to take a part of Nightmare Nurse's soul, and now she can be recreated using it.  So yay, Nightmare Nurse is back, and she explains that when she possessed Alice Winter that Alice was dying, and she saved her life.  Now she asks Alice for permission to take over her body, and promises not to bury her consciousness like she did before.  Alice agrees and in the end we see Nightmare Nurse reborn, and thank something it looks like she's here to stay.  I was so afraid that this was a way to get rid of the character, but thankfully that wasn't the case.  Make sure to come back next month when we continue to look at the adventures of the Justice League Dark.

Bits and Pieces:

DeMatteis continues to let his strange imagination soar in plotting out the adventures of our Dark heroes.  Thankfully with no event distractions this series has gotten back to it's own pace and I've been loving it.  Let's not forget the great art by Andres Guinaldo who wows me every month he's been on this title.  It's odd as much as I love Guinaldo on this title, I really want to see what else he can do because it's just amazing what he does with these characters.  Another solid issue, and I can't wait to see where this series heads to next.

8.7/10
