The World Continues To End......... Weekly

For this recap section I could go back and explain all of Earth 2 leading up to here, but that would just be crazy and I'm a little annoyed that you would ask that of me.  I've been wanting more Earth 2 titles for a long time now and man have I got it in spades now that October's here.  We've got Earth 2, Earth 2: World's End, Worlds' Finest and Futures End that deals with the events of Earth 2 and Earth 2: Worlds' End.  I'm seriously going to get these titles confused in the future and maybe a little now.  So let's check out what we'll be dealing with now that The Kryptonian story line is finished and we see our heroes try to rebuild their world.  Come on..........  Let's go.

Explain It!:

Our story begins with a bit of recap of the events throughout the Earth 2 series.  I've already said I'm not going to recap this......... so I'm not.  The bits of information that seemed new is that Terry Sloan appears to have completely sold out Earth 2 to Darkseid right from the beginning.  In this book the Apokoliptians refer to him as "The Traveler" and as we've seen in Earth 2: Futures End, Terry Sloan isn't originally from that world, so it doesn't seem like much for him to sell it out but I'm left wondering, where the hell is he really from?  We're also shown that Dick Grayson is apart of this world even though he never became the sidekick to Batman.  He apparently married Barbara Gordon and had a son with her.  She's a cop, he's a reporter and before the invasion they seemed to have a nice life together.  I'm just glad that we're going to see these characters in the future and see how they'll become a part of this world's heroes.  We also see that Big Barda seems to be working with Bedlam who has Mister Terrific, Terry Sloan and Mister Miracle under his mind control and I don't know what's up with that.  We haven't seen her since she was fighting Fury with Mister Miracle in Gotham, so hopefully it's just a ruse.  Anyway we see all the events that led up to Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman foiling Darkseid's plan to takeover the world and sacrificing their lives in the process.

The main story begins with our heroes trying to save survivors of the Bizarro Superman's attacks and that seems to be put on hold once Power Girl and Huntress find who they think are impostors wearing their loved ones costumes.  Well after a brief realization about who they are, we see a small reunion unfold, but all the good feelings are put on hold when fire pits around the world spew out the Furies of Apokolips and I guess a superheroes job is never done.

I'm sorry I'm finding it hard to explain this issue because it talks about so much.  I just want you to know some underlying stories that will I assume be featured in this series and are a more of a behind the scenes of the regular Earth 2 title.  It seems that Alan Scott was partnering with Terry Sloan when Sloan was beginning his experiments with Boom Tube technology and it's because of Allen's funding that Darkseid's invasion happened in the first place.  On top of that Alan's lover Sam put the information out on the net because he didn't believe that Alan should of been doing it and our technopath Jimmy Olsen found out about it and was put on ice by Batman for hacking into secured systems.  It all wraps around itself and shows us that Sam was killed by Sloan because of him letting the information out, which led to our heroes creating the virus and stopping the invasion.  The only problem I have with the story is the timelines seem to be jumping all over the place.  Somethings seem fine at first and then we see another part of the story without any time difference and it just doesn't completely add up for me.  Now even with my time discrepancies I really enjoyed this book and even though I knew the majority of the information because I've been reading Earth 2 from the beginning, I didn't find it really hindering my experience.  It was actually nice to see a quick recap of the road so far...  All in all I had a lot of trouble conveying what this story was about and I don't know if I'm just really off tonight or what, I just want you to know that I really liked it and can't wait for next week's issue.

Bits and Pieces:

This oversized issue was a really strong start to what I hope opens the Earth 2 world up for more parallel world fun.  I just really hope that we're not getting into a weekly series that's one over the top battle after another and we actually get to see these characters shine and become as important to us as the Prime-Earth heroes are.  I loved the artwork even with this book's many artists and the secret intermingled lives of our heroes that led to the beginning of the Earth 2 series made the heroes seem more connected than previously believed.  Go check it out and get lost in the awesome world of Earth 2.

8.5/10
