Setup and Payoff

I have really enjoyed Year Three for the combination of great new magical characters and the great interactions between them. Constantine is quickly becoming my favorite character (second to Harley, of course) and I love his back-and-forth with Batman. While Batman is hardly in this issue, his presence is still felt.  This issue goes from being a setup issue to being one of the most important of any years.  The game has changed and I can't wait to see what happens next.

The issue opens up back in Gotham where Team Batman is holding Raven captive.  She thinks that she is all that when she gets Teekl to "accidental" free her spirit.  That accidental is in quotes because it's all Klarion and Constantine's plan.  I love Constantine's reaction when Klarion asks if Batman knows what they're doing.  I hope he finds out soon to see the fireworks.

We then cut to Superman and the Spectre hanging out in Space, looking at the peaceful Earth.  The Spectre wants to crown Superman the savior of the World, but Superman knows there's still work to do.  Then Raven arrives.  The Spectre tries to kill her, but Superman not only saves her, but flies off to retrieve her body.  Everyone reading the book knows he's walking into a trap, but who's involved and just how fully he goes down is a shock.  I love being shocked.  Again, I want to see how Batman reacts to all this.

The first three quarters of the issue was pure setup and while it was good, nothing could have prepared me for the cliffhanger.  What happens really changes everything and makes the next issue crucial to the story going forward.  I can't wait to see what happens.

Bruno Redondo kicks ass.  I love every character he does and he never skimps on any of them, no matter how crowded this book gets.  This issue isn't crowded, per se, but that's beside the point.  It looked great.

Bits and Pieces:

I love Injustice and Year Three has made me love it more.  The magical character, especially Consantine, have brought a breath of fresh air to everything.  This week we get a lot of setup and then, BANG! it pays off in spades.  Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo are one of my favorite creative teams and their love of this book is obvious.  I can't wait until next week, as usual.

8.5/10
