The Reverse of Fun

The New Suicide Squad has been a guilty pleasure of mine.  I've enjoyed what Sean Ryan has done on this book and the introduction of the new team seemed like a ticket for even better times.  Unfortunately, that isn't the case this month.  Ryan and a team of artists continue the Squad's adventure in China, but it felt way too generic to get me excited. The whole thing devolved into a beat-em up with poor attempts at humor and characters who seem unfamiliar to each other as well as to readers who have been following them each month.  I'm not sure what happened, but I don't like it.

Last month's issue ended with the Squad face-to-ugly-face with a bunch of under cooked zombies and after a quick scene with a whiny Vic Sage, it's right back to them.  The mystery of what these things are and what they are used for is shoved aside for a mediocre battle.  While Reverse Flash plants bombs as quick as he can (not fast enough), Black Manta fights, Captain Boomerang cracks jokes and Harley Quinn mugs for the camera.  It's not good at all.

While this is going on, Amanda Waller decided to put a salad on hold for a pulled pork sandwich and Vic Sage either was recruited to an evil organization or was hit on by one sharp dressed man.  I really don't care which.  In fact, this issue ruins a lot of the good will that the five previous issues established.  This book was never great, but Sean Ryan made it into an 80's action movie and I thought it was a bunch of fun.  The fun train has been delayed for at least a month.

The issue ends with Man Bats coming to the rescue, an explosion and a lone survivor of the Chinese experiment out for revenge. I can't say I'm excited about any of this because without the fun, this book really wears thin. I can only hope that next month, Sean Ryan gets it all back on track.

Another problem with the book this week was the art.  Four artists come together to give the reader a mess of an issue.  There are transition problems galore and this book may have the worst Harley Quinn I've seen in a long time.

Bits and Pieces:

I have tried to defend this rebooted Suicide Squad, but this month I can't.  It's a filler issue that isn't fun and fun is the one thing this book had.  Sean Ryan doesn't give us much as far as story and the four artists combine to give us a steaming pile.  Yes, this book has words and pictures, but not much more.

2.0/10

    1. A lot of things haunt your dreams! I think Harley's look in this book is what I'll see when I close my eyes at night.

    3. Please make it that the "Wall" is coming back! Each month she starts eating more and more shitty food until she finally is living the good life of a Weird Science comic book reviewer. Next month...donut bacon cheeseburgers all around!
