Oh God, You Devil

Last week's Injustice was one of the better issues of Year Four and I enjoyed it's bash-em up action that was the closest this book has come to emulating the game it's based on in a long time.  While this "Year of the Gods" had gone pretty much unfulfilled up until then, the promise of superhero versus god battles finally came to fruition.  The issue ended with Wonder Woman getting the crap kicked out of her by Hercules and Superman taking a space nap after being knocked out.  The cliffhanger promised that Shazam would get involved again and really, how can you have gods fighting without Shazaam?  Did this issue keep the Injustice trolley riding down kickass avenue?  Let's find out...

The issue opens by reminding the reader that Superman is fast asleep while orbiting the Earth, but quickly heads to Olympus where Zeus is none too happy about this war going on.  He questions Hera on who else in involved and it made me laugh when he wonders if Ares might be part of all this.  Ares involved in a huge war?  No, really?!?!  He doesn't wait for an answer, however,  and the scene ends with him teleporting away.

That's when we see the badass of the issue...Shazam.  Recently, Shazam (and  Billy Batson, of course) has been relegated to being Harley's boy toy and comic relief, but not here.  He is awe inspiring and shows up just in time to save Wonder Woman from a Hercules beat down.  The mythological hero may have cleaned the Augean Stables in one day, but Shazam cleans his clock in this issue.  We also get Batwoman using Diana's lasso against her and it finally looked like she would get the revenge she's been looking for.

This is the kind of action I've been waiting for throughout this Year and because of that, I was calling for blood.  However, Shazam and Batwoman both step back when it comes to finishing the job.  It makes sense, but it would have been cool to see Shazam take care of Herc (I can still call him that, right?)  Don't worry, however, because the issue ends with Hercules getting his and his father showing up to end the madness...possibly.

I really had fun reading this issue.  Shazam getting back into the mix and in such a badass way was a godsend and I can't wait for next week.  That's two issues in a row that I've said that.  keep up the good work, Brian.

Bruno Redondo kicks ass as usual.  He continues giving fans of this book the best versions of all the characters in the fight.  Again, Shazam is the highlight and his battle with Hercules looked great.  Rex Lokus and Juan Albarran do a great job on inks and colors and the trio combine to make a great looking book.  Great job!

Bits and Pieces:

Injustice is back and we are finally getting the Year of the Gods I've been waiting for.  Hercules versus Shazam was such a great battle and the action and dialogue were top notch.  The issue ended with more godly promise and I can't wait until next issue.  Recommended.

8.9/10
