What You Can Do For Your Country

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Oh, we're continuing our Combat time with this story as we check back in on Supergirl and Stargirl.  In the previous issue where we dealt with these characters, we saw that Stargirl wanted to become one of the Soviet's premier fighter pilots by becoming apart of the Night Witches.  Initially, it looked like she was going to get her wish and with her sister Supergirl at her side helping to make her dream a reality, it looked liked everything would be pinatas and RC cola.  Too bad that Stargirl's plane malfunctioned and Supergirl had to reveal her powers to save her, which led to the Soviets claiming that the two were traitors and that they would be arrested.  My biggest gripe with the previous issue was how similar our two leading ladies looked and hopefully I'll have an easier time distinguishing the two here.  Let's jump into Soviet Russia and see how Supergirl and Stargirl fair now that the cat's out of the bag about what Kara can do.  let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with Supergirl and Stargirl being surrounded by military police, but it doesn't look like Supergirl is ready to be captured and super speeds her way through a couple of armed soldiers, but the whole thing goes downhill when our heroes are forced to.......... well be heroes.  A bullet deflects off a plane's wing and before it can kill a comrade of these two, Supergirl uses her super speed to grab the bullet before it can shred through a fellow Night Witch.  The Squadron Commander takes this opportunity to end the fight by taking Kortni hostage and Supergirl shows her true weakness.......Love for her sister.  Supergirl surrenders and the interrogation begins.

We get the lowdown on how Kortni and Kara can be sisters and we find out that their father married an already pregnant widow and before Kortni was born, their father trekked out into the woods in order to find a fallen star, that their mother believed would be a good omen for their unborn daughter, but what he found instead was a young girl that the couple took into their home and raised as one of their own.  The two girls were well cared for and shared everything and their parents considered them their two fallen stars.

In the end, the Soviet secret police want a demonstration of Kara's powers and after heat visioning the lights, almost causing a bunch of people to begin shooting in a dark room, when the lights are restored, we see that Kara has created a mural of what Kortni and her can mean for this country that they claim as their home.  We see a intricate portrait of Kara and Kortni in what they will become as Supergirl and Stargirl.  General Arkayn seems impressed and wants to use these two as propaganda to show the pinnacle of Soviet civilization........ Just so long as they behave.

That's it for this issue of DC Comics: Bombshells and I really liked having a backstory for our two heroes here and I really dug the explanation on how the two are sisters.  While I can't say that the art is the strongest that this series has seen, the furthering of the story is well worth this issue because I dug the direction that Marguerite Bennett is taking with Supergirl and Stargirl and how they'll come to represent the strength of the Soviet Union.  While I still have an issue differentiating between our two heroes, I think that problem will be rectified once we get these two in costume.

Explain It!:

While the art in this issue isn't as strong as we've come to know it to be from this series, the continuation of Supergirl and Stargirl's story is pretty exciting.  I love the direction and I can't wait to see what happens to these characters next and what will happen when all of our heroines finally meet.

7/10
