Oh, what a sad day, a sad day indeed.  The final chapter of this first volume of The Legend of Wonder Woman has arrived and after a huge snafu where DC charged me three dollars that still didn't get me the complete chapter, I am here to review it!  I know that Renae De Liz announced that we will get a Volume Two of the book and while that makes me happy for the future, I live in the here and now and so it's with a heavy heart (and a lighter wallet) that I give you my review for the final chapter of one of my favorite books of the last couple of years...

I was really wondering how this chapter would start.  The last we saw, Diana was giving the Manhunter/Titan a deathblow punch (finish him!) and this chapter opens with the deed done...the Titan has been vanquished.  However, we see it from Hippolyta's point of view.  Hippolyta!  We haven't seen her in a while and I was glad to see her alive and well after all the fears and doubts that came up in the last half of this series.  It's a brief scene, but shows that she has and still is worrying about her daughter and the future ahead of her if she continues being the world's champion.  Boy, everyone is always worrying about things...

And that continues as we see Diana talking with Alcippe about all that has happened and a bit about the future as well.  This is the start of me getting real excited about the next volume of the book (like I needed any excuse) as Alcippe hints at "others" who will join the fight with Diana.  It's not all cryptic talk and worries, though, as De Liz throws in some in-jokes for those who have been reading since the beginning.  Alcippe is not a fan of the lasso!  The scene ends with another awesome promise of the future that would certainly make Diana very, very happy if and when it comes to be.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Diana did defeat the Titan and that should be cause for some celebration, right?  Right!  An who better to start the party than my favorite character...Etta Candy!  I know I go on and on about her in my reviews, but she is the one I will miss the most waiting for volume two of this book to come out.  If you don't know why, just read this issue and you will see.  The minute she shows up, the whole mood of the chapter is lifted and after she gets some long overdue attention, the Holiday Girls show up and the party has started!

The problem is, Diana doesn't feel like partying and says a very quick goodbye and leaves.  Just like that.  I understand why she did it, but I was a bit upset at her for doing it anyway.  She just leaves Steve and Etta hanging!

The rest of the chapter is devoted to tying up some loose ends, but also dangling some hints of the future.  We get confirmation that we did see the origin of one of Wonder Woman's biggest villains earlier in the series, a sad (maybe) ending for this volume's big bad and a look at a scary future for the Universe.

The chapter ends perfectly with Etta finding Diana's secret hiding place (because, you know, she's Etta!), catching up on things and giving more awesome hints about where the book may be headed in volume two.  I can't wait!

I love this book so much!  I don't know if this chapter was written after volume two was signed, sealed and delivered because it is more of a promise of what's to come than a solid "it all ends here" type of ending.  It doesn't matter, though, because there is another volume coming and whether it deals with everything we are promised here, I know I will be a huge fan.  I do wish that we could have seen more of a goodbye with Diana and Steve Trevor and more of a resolution of the Duke of Deception/Hippolyta connection, but other than that, I really liked this ending a whole lot.

The art in this chapter is awesome as usual.  I mentioned before that until you hear otherwise, consider this one of the best looking comics out there.  You will not hear otherwise this week.  This chapter is really about the emotions of the characters and De Liz and Ray Dillon nail them.  I am putting my favorite panel below to show you what I mean.  If you have been reading the whole series, I hope it made you smile like I did.

Bits and Pieces:

While I am so happy this isn't the ending, Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon finish up their awesome first volume by tying things up and also giving fans huge hints and promises of what's to come.  It all makes the wait for the next bunch of stories easier and harder all at the same time.  I don't know if that makes any sense, but I do know that I love this book and beg and plead for everyone to at least give it a try.  I am not a guy who likes to put myself out on the limb much, but I will with this book because of the obvious care and love both De Liz and Dillon put into it.  Plus, it just kicks total butt!!!

9.5/10
