HELP! I Need Somebody! HELP! Not Just Anybody!

I’m a big fan of crazy things and therefore tend to look for a little bit of that crazy in the comics I buy, read, and enjoy.  Don’t get me wrong I still like a coherent story I can follow as well, and not just any random character thrown on a page will entertain me.  So with all that being said I would like to proclaim that one of the few books able to check off all my complicated prerequisites, sometimes twice, and a book that I absolutely look forward to reading each month because of it, is the Unbelievable Gwenpool. Now I know I’ve been slacking on reviewing this title lately, but that in no way means I haven’t been enjoying, and reading this book still. Simply insert life excuse here I guess.  However this is a down week for me, as far as books I review here on the site go, so it provides the perfect opportunity to catch up on some missed assignments I've neglected but still enjoyed. So I’d like to highlight first, my girl Gwen Poole in, the Unbelievable Gwenpool #9.

On the previous visit with Gwen, we left off with the discovery that Vincent, a shady individual responsible for providing Gwen’s Team M.O.D.A.K. with resources, money, and missions, isn’t exactly on the up and up, or human either.  Although that may be the least surprising thing I’ve read in comics lately we are also treated to a second revelation involving this Vincent character.  Gwen has discovered, when she shot him at the end of issue eight, Ol’ Vinny boy is a full-fledged Doombot! Cue the shocked YouTube chipmunk!

Now oddly, instead of events picking up right where we left off last issue, we take a brief detour to discover how this Doombot, Vincent, came to be the way he is.  The story starts as we go through Vincent’s creation at the hands of Dr. Doom, through his escape from a Squirrel Girl attack, into some adventures in the real world, all eventually leading to Vincent establishing its own identity, mission, and obtaining freedom along the way form a kind hearted “Tinkerer”.

Eventually, the events of the past catch up with our present day back alley showdown. A pissed off Vincent begins to unleash on Gwen who does what she does best and runs for the nearest cover spot. Gwen, while hoping and praying someone will bail her out of trouble, places a call to Miles Morales in a desperate cell phone plea for help ... SPOLIER ALERT: His mom answers and he's busy. Meanwhile across town, the Aliens hired by Vincent, who also invaded Earth earlier in the series, currently have kidnapped the rest of Gwen’s team (even the pet pig) and is holding them hostage. So it looks like our hero is up shits creek without a paddle all the way around.

The book moves along and Gwen comiclly continues to hide and avoid Vincent as he destroyes the surrounding area. Gwen desperate to find anyone to assist her at one point even tries to recruit a police officers to her aid. Eventually our hero realizes a girl has to do what a girl has to do resulting in Gwenpool stealing a police cruiser to get the hell out of dodge and regroup back at base.

Our book wraps up once Gwen arrives back at M.O.D.A.K headquarters. To our hero's suprise she actually recieves some good news this issues as she stumbles upon a group of MODAK soldier’s that she was previously unaware of or who just returned back from a mission and who all look ready to work.

Overall the Gwenpool title continues to be a solid, action packed, comedy book you can look to and relay on as one of the most consistently steady reads currently available in Marvel’s ever growing stable of books. This is a title that has maintained a high quality all the way from issue one through nine, where we sit now.  Christopher Hastings continues to do an excellent job building a character to care about while Gurihiru’s art continues to rocket up my own personal favorite artist list a little more each time I see the work on display.

Bits and Pieces
Please forgo all your judgements and preconceptions you have about this character/title. Just spend a little money and I guarantee you’ll have yourself a good little bit fun because there’s a ton to enjoy here in this book.
