It's time to head on over to Kravia and see what those crazy Extremists from Earth-8 are up to know that Lord Havok has gone and gotten himself elected ruler of the country.  Yeah, that was a crazy turn of events last issue and even crazier that we got into some international incident territory when the JLA were kicked out because they weren't wanted there.  It's so weird to me to have something with America in the name of it invading a country out of nowhere and especially one that doesn't want them there........... Is Steve Orlando trying to tell us something?  Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing what the JLA plan to do now that they were told to hit the bricks and The Extremists have the power and authority to start reaching out to other countries and possibly taking control.  Let's check this out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins and continues with Lord Havok reaching out to surrounding country leaders and asking them to join him so that they can be strong as he remembers them from his own world and of course he adds a "Or Else" to his offer, but with this going it doesn't look good for our JLA team as they try to regroup after being told to leave Kravia in the previous issue and when we come across them here, they're reaching out to a group of people........... in Kravia, who want to see Havok taken down because while the people are suffering, they themselves aren't the ones who elected him.  So yeah, after a "Ra Ra" speech from our team, these freedom fighters begin to trust our heroes and tell them that if they're to take back their country, they'll need them to use their superpowers to take out the other superpowers in their way to Havok, which leads us to a big ass montage of our heroes going one on one with the Extremists.

We start this out with Lobo confronting Tracer, The Atom and Killer Frost going up against Death Bat.......... after Death Bat seemingly kills her teammate Brute........ who was sent by Havok to kill her for her defeat in the previous issue, Black Canary taking on Gorgon, The Ray coming to a understanding with Dreamslayer and finally Vixen, Batman and the freedom fighter leader Bogna making their way to the capital and taking on Lord Havok himself.

In the end, we don't really see much out of the individual fights except for a panel here and there, but Vixen and Bogna find out that all of their fighting to get to the capital might have been for not because while they were making their way there, Havok had convinced the surrounding countries to become a part of Kravia so as he puts it, they're surrounded.  This doesn't stop Batman from making a bad ass entrance by throwing some explosives Havok's way and taking the shield that he wore around his back............. which is odd because for some reason he's wearing the red shield we saw in the previews of the Rebirth issue that has Miss Liberty printed on it and I have no idea where he got it or what its significance is, but we leave this issue with Batman holding it in front of him as he stares down Lord Havok.

That's it for this issue of JLA and while this wasn't a bad issue, we still didn't have a lot for all our heroes to do except for seeing that they were going to square off against a member of the Extremists, which even that came off as odd to me because we were specifically told in the previous issue that the JLA had to leave Kravia if they didn't want to start an international incident, but here they are starting a war in a foreign country and that just seems like a bad start for a new superhero team.  The art in this issue is really great though and I hope that Diogenes Neves becomes this series' regular artist because I could totally get on board with seeing this level of art each issue.  Besides that though, there really isn't much to this issue at all and it flies by fast as hell....... and I'm starting to think that's because there isn't much substance here beyond the idea that we're supposed to think that we're dealing with some heavy political situations.

Bits and Pieces:

While this issue looked great through and through, the substance of the book comes off a bit light for what we're dealing with.  I mean, here we have a potential war inciting situation, but there doesn't really seem to be any real consequences to anything our heroes do and beyond that, there really isn't a lot for our heroes to do overall, except for show up where they're supposed to be so we can forget about them.  This series is still a bit off for me but hopefully after this arc has concluded it will pick up.

6.3/10

  1. I will admit this isn't the usual poor dialogue we get from Steve Orlando. But it is a week story. The art was good, just the story needed something more. I also agree with your score Eric.

  2. Perhaps this steaming red liberty shield is how Havok has been unbeatable. An unbeatable Batman due to the shield would rank up there with the Mobiuschair Batman! Where the hell has the Mobiuschair been anyway...
