Greg Rucka's run is coming to an end and I am really interested in how it all ties together.  We still have a bunch of things to see and figure out before we say goodbye to Greg and I am hoping it continues here.  I say "hoping" because after seeing the Truth story in the last issue, it seems like we don't have much more to say in this Godwatch story.  So, what does Rucka do to make this issue meaningful?  Let's see...

The issue opens with Steve Trevor waiting near a very familiar dark tree and it's obvious that we are finally caught up with the Lies/Truth story and moving forward here.  Steve is interrupted by a flash of light and Veronica Cale coming out of it.  She tries to storm past Steve, but they are joined by Wonder Woman.  Actually, Steve is joined by Diana and they share a kiss while Veronica looks on...and leaves.

After Diana explains a bit of what happened, we see Cheetah in the shadows as Diana seems to give up on her.  After they leave, we see more rejection thrown at Cheetah and in a great bit of art by Bilquis Evely, see the pain and anger in her eyes.

Back in Washington DC, Diana and Steve visit with Etta and we see Wonder Woman doesn't have her lasso anymore, but is set on finding and helping Barbara Minerva.  It all leads to Cale who is busy at the moment isolating herself from her only friend, Dr. Cyber.  It's a sad enough scene, but she deserves every bit of trouble coming her way, if you ask me.

The issue continues with Cheetah confronting Veronica and luckily for her, Wonder Woman shows up.  It's a pretty exciting fight that breaks out, but it really feels like filler taking up time until the end.  The issue ends with Diana taking Cheetah away to continue trying to save her and Veronica Cale alone and sad...or mad...or both.

This was a quick moving issue that wasn't bad, but just felt like it was a placeholder until the big #25 finale.  I haven't been the biggest supporter of the way Greg Rucka has handled the past continuity of Wonder Woman, seemingly shoving his in it's place, so it confused me when his characters, like Ferdinand, are shoved aside.  Maybe he doesn't want Shea Fontana playing with his toys, but it throws this book off a bit in my mind.  I will reserve full judgement for next issue, but this one was not my favorite of the run by any means.

I did love Bilquis Evely's art here.  She handles the action scenes as well as the quieter ones with ease.  I love her Veronica Cale and her Cheetah is awesome.  I hope she is on a big book after this run is over.

Bits and Pieces:

This issue seems stuck between the big reveals of the Truth finale in issue #23 and the big over sized finale up next.  Greg Rucka does give us some nice character moments, but also rushes some characters out of the book.  I loved Bilquis Evely's art, but if you are on the fence, just wait for Greg Rucka's last issue in two weeks.

  1. Great review as always. I do have a two questions. First, how did Cheetah make it back to America? I assume that the island tree portal to Themysicra is the middle of Mediterran. Did she swim all the way back? Second, how is Cale not dead. Cheetah clawed this woman's back at least three times and threw her out a window. Yet, she was able to basically walk it off? Are we sure Cale's not an Amazon? Nonetheless, I am looking forward to the end of this story in a few weeks.
