Now that Manchester Black and his Elite were defeated and Superman got to spend some time training Jon in the art of using his powers and saving people, it's time to get into our next arc, where we see the Kent Family heading out on a road trip.  Yeah, that's about all I got for you because there isn't a lot of background that you need going into this issue besides for the fact that Superman has been run ragged from all of his recent adventures and even that is made quite apparent by the beginning of this issue.  So yeah, let's jump into this issue and see what kind of vacation the Kent Family will have and if anything out of the ordinary will get in their way.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Like I said in my intro, this issue begins with Superman being run ragged from his recent adventures and we see our hero so tired that he actually falls asleep while flying home for the night.  Once he's home though and has himself a decent night sleep, he wakes to find that Lois has been planning a little family vacation in the form of a road trip and has even rented out a Winnegago for their travels.  The only rule for this trip seems to be no TV, which Jon initially takes pretty hard, but quickly gets over it once the family hits the road and they all pick two destinations which they want to visit........ and that's where the issue takes a turn into just being a history lesson about America.

Our first stop though is pretty fun, where Jon has a request that he wants to boogie board down Niagara Falls, but after that this issue becomes very heavy handed in telling Jon and us what sacrifice and honor means by going to the grave of Deborah Sampson, who was a woman who pretended to be a man so that she could fight in the Revolutionary War and then to the 107th Infantry Memorial, where we learn how real war is and that people are pieces of shit because they'd graffiti a statue like this and damage it while doing so........  Yeah, this isn't really a fun comic.

In the end, we make our way to Independence Hall and learn that the people of Philadelphia are pieces of shit as well because at the end of the day when the Kent Family is looking for a place to eat, they ask a homeless vet to have dinner with them and the restaurant wants to throw him out before Clark throws down a big speech about the celebrities that people honor instead of the county's actual heroes and as we close this issue it seems that simple cries of passion like this one are enough to change people because the owner of the restaurant then offers the vet a job.  The family vacation can't be perfect though because even though the Kent's have taken off from their day jobs, Superman is still Superman and has to go off to take care of some Justice League business.

That's it for this issue of Superman and while it may come off sounding anti-American, this issue is not fun at all and seems to just be a way for Tomasi and Gleason to get on their soapboxes about what's wrong with America, while giving you a history lesson about what once made it great.  I mean, we see Clark Kent being a good guy in this issue, but it's not unexpected because we all know that Superman is a good guy and that the rest of his family are as well............ So really, there's nothing going on in this issue besides for a history lesson and finding out that people are pieces of shit and it's really disappointing because of this.  The art was fine, but I was just bored throughout this story and then angry that we had to have an issue that forced an agenda down your throat this hard.

Bits and Pieces:

This issue was probably the most disappointing issue of Superman that we've had during the Rebirth era of the comic because nothing went down besides for a history lesson about America and finding out that people are sometimes pieces of shit.  The art in this issue was fine, but that's about the only thing that was fine.

5/10

  1. I have to say this issue was kinda cringe.
I would want a fun Superman story to read and not some politics. If I wanted that I would read Marvel.

    1. Sure it's fine to be reminded of these, if only it was interesting while doing it.
