I really enjoyed last issue of Justice League and that was such a pleasant surprise.  Yea, I haven't been a big fan of this run, but it looks like Bryan Hitch just may be able to stick the landing as he departs and makes everything a little bit better in the world.  We shall see if that continues, but I actually looked forward to this issue and that's something I haven't felt in over a year.  So, do the good times keep a rollin'?  Let's find out...

The issue opens with everyone up in the Watchtower and as the Justice League looks on, the kids reminisce about the good times they had...in the Watchtower.  I have to admit, they talk the talk.  It's some quick fun that turns wonky for a second and while it's nothing that effected my score, I am still scratching my head over it.  Why would anyone decide to have placards telling us who the Justice League members are, but not do the same for the kids...that were just introduced last issue?!?!?  Seriously, I think most people know who Superman and Wonder Woman are, but do they know Jenny and Jason?

In the meantime, Cyborg goes off to run some DNA tests and the rest get down to the big question at hand...why did the kids come back in time?  It's a pretty clear cut reason and then comes the fun stuff...finding out who had which kid.

This is the bit that had the most people worried and also the bit that they thought Hitch would screw up the most.  Guess what?  He doesn't!  Yes, Cruise, Jenny and Jason are Jessica and Barry's kids, but all it takes is Barry to ask,  "How am I gonna tell Iris?" to make it work.  Then there is Hunter.  It sure looked like he was Diana's and Clark's kid, but what we find out here is so much better!  I won't spoil it, but Hitch does a really good job of explaining what happened while also making me wish we saw much more of future he talks about.

The coolness continues as we learn more about the kids and the Justice League's future.  My favorites are the Lanterns, Jenny and Jason, but Simon Baz's future is pretty cool too.  Then Hitch suprised me once again by tying the current Aquaman and Super Sons stories into his in a way that made total sense.  Go figure!

The story continues with Cube showing the League the dark future ahead...a future where the League disappeared during and left the kids to fend for themselves.  That pretty much takes us up to where last issue started and everything passes the smell test...except that the kids seem to be hiding more than they are telling.

The issue ends with Wonder Woman confused and angry and Batman hanging out in the Batcave when he gets a very crazy and unwelcome Guest.  It kind of throws a theory I had about the bad guys out the window, but it is brutal fun nonetheless.

I really liked this issue.  Bryan Hitch ties the Justice League's kids into current continuity with a...hitch, and continues the mystery surrounding why they came to find their parents.  The issues isn't perfect, though.  The kids talk on the Watchtower as if Superman can't hear every word they are saying and Jessica kissing Barry on the cheek felt a bit awkward, but those are minor things in a story arc that I am really, really enjoying.

I am also really enjoying Fernando Pasarin's art as well.  I have not been the biggest fan of when he is on this book, but this issue may be his best yet.  The character designs are great and that's key since a bunch of the issue is just the cast standing around talking to each other.

Bits and Pieces:

Where has this story been all my life...or at least during Rebirth?  Bryan Hitch continues to impress me with his final arc by tying up some of his loose ends while also fitting this story squarely into the current continuity.  I am intrigued and looking forward to seeing what happens next.

    1. I know what you mean. Is the world coming to an end? We have a solar eclipse coming up and now two good issues of Justice League from Hitch? The end is nigh, people. Nonetheless, good review as always Jim

  2. Wonder Woman abandoned her baby, Superman took him in and raised him like his own...as a Wonder Woman fan that's outrageous, this JL run is PAINFUL make it stop please...

    1. I think there is more to the Diana stuff. I think Diana and Simon being outside of the regular group in this instance will be significant and that it's trying to make you assume the Sovereign is Diana. Actually really interested in where it goes from here. It could all fall apart, but so far it's been two issues going.

    2. That does make sense, I think there's more to it as well, Wonder Woman was shocked that she'd done such a thing

    3. yea, this future (and the kids) are bound to turn out as something else...Bryan Hitch is probably allowed to have fun since this future will never happen

    4. As a Wonder Woman fan, I know the pain. Hitch has never written her correctly imo. However, Hunter isn't Superman's biological son and that gains a few points from me. I'm hoping that this all works out, but we will see.

  3. This story reminds me of an Avengers movie were in a apocalyptic future were Ultron rules the world and the Avengers had children between them so once again it seems like Hitch copied a story or is just very unoriginal
Barry of all people should know that meeting his kids from the future doesnt mean it will happen, why would he worry about telling Iris?

    1. think that is there so we realize he is aware of the current continuity. Hitch has gotten issues with Barry and Jessica already so I didn't mind the Iris shoutout

  4. Great review Mr. Werner I agree with everything you wrote except the score (I'd go 7.5) and the bad hitch pun. Just kidding I liked the hitch pun. I was hoping you might enlighten me about those JL placards, but apparently you were as baffled as I was. Before people get too upset that Wonder Woman left Hunter, calm down. We've only heard his version of the story, maybe Diana had a valid reason that Hunter is unaware of. I don't always like these stories that feature analogs of heroes from different times or universes, but so far this is a blast.

  5. Ehhh. Really? "All it took was Barry to say what am I going to tell Iris." That was the most cringe worthy moment in the entire issue. I mean if Bary and Jessica started dating again prior to ths, it would make a little more logical sense with the main continuity.
