This series has been balls to the wall crazy since the first issue, and I have loved every page of it. This is exactly what I want from a Vertigo series: a story for mature readers that doesn’t hold anything back and is always going in high gear with the action, intrigue, and merciless killings.

I love the way the flashbacks in this series have told a good story in their own right, and played into the main narrative as well. It reminds me a lot of the way the first two seasons of Arrow used the flashbacks to play off of the current timeline without overshadowing it.

This issue opens with another one of those flashbacks, this one picking up where the last one left off with Abel stopping Miss Abernathy from taking Cain. Abel grabs Abernathy and holds a knife to her throat while telling Cain that he doesn’t get to leave after Abel protected him. Cain is one of them now, there is no more “James.”

In the present, Cain is in complete control. He’s taken over the mayor’s safehouse, and the only ones left to stop him are Kira and Abel. When they get there, Cain sends two more of the Black Forrest after them and we get another one of the awesome action sequences that have become a mainstay through these first 6 issues. Kira and Abel deal with these two, but Cain sneaks up on Kira and holds a gun to her head.

Flashing back 25 years again, Abel tells Cain that the only way he leaves is in death. Abel hands him the knife and lets him choose who dies. Reluctantly, Cain chooses self-preservation and slices Abernathy’s throat.

Back in the present day story, Cain has pretty much won. He has Kira, he has the mayor, and Abel is alone. The mayor talks into a camera and issues a statement saying that he is captured, and if Marty and Bob aren’t brought in within four hours, a bomb will go off and release enough radioactive material to kill every person in Manhattan.

I don’t know what more I can say about this book. Justin Jordan and Ibrahim Moustafa have crafted six truly great comics, and I hope they keep the ball rolling from here.

Bits and Pieces:

I encourage everyone out there looking for a good mature book to give this one a try. The art is fantastic, the story is gripping, and the characters are interesting. This book is the real deal.

  1. I friggin love this book! It's a shame that it's going to end in 2 issues I hope there is a part 2 in the future. This book should get way more love than it gets it seems to have gone right by most people nobody ever talks about it but it's one of the best books out there and we need more Vertigo books this good.
