I really liked the first issue of this series and have been looking forward to this one for a month now.  Yes, this is a dark future where Dick Grayson is not exactly a hero, but that's the fun with elseworlds stories like this, isn't it?  Yes, it is!  The want to know so much more about the story that Kyle Higgins is giving us and I want to know it yesterday.  Patience was never one of my strong points, obviously.  My wait is over, but is this issue worthy of my early praise?  Let's find out...

The issue opens with a very cool and stylized narration that explains what lead to Dick Grayson shutting down all super powers in this dark future.  It's all through the words of his son, Jake, and Kyle Higgins fills in some blanks that lead us to the present and the ramifications of the first issue's cliffhanger.

Mr. Terrific is in the house and he is studying Jake while Dick looks on and it's a worst case scenario since Jake is not responding to the inhibitors and if you read last issue, you know what that means...stasis!  Dick wants no parts of that for his son and they take off to figure out a plan.

Back at the house, Dick and Alfred try to figure things out, but really, there aren't many options.  Dick seems set on training Jake to be part of the Task Force, but even that seems like a long shot.

After a really great (and heartbreaking) scene with Jake and Alfred, we see just how serious all of this is.  No matter how much Dick Grayson feels the world owes him, it all comes crashing down when his Task Force shows up to take his son.  The issue ends with a standoff, a kickass Alfred who won't take no more and a tragedy that feels like it's just the first of many to come in this series.

I loved this issue!  Kyle Higgins is still going about it all in a very subtle way.  We learn things very naturally and because of that, nothing here feels forced.  I am so into this series and the only thing I worry about is that things might have to be crammed into the last couple issues because the biggest tragedy is this is only a six issue mini.

Trevor McCarthy's art is really good throughout this entire issue, but the best part is the storybook-like flashback in the beginning.  I loved it and it helped set up the issue so well.

Bits and Pieces:

Don't let the elseworlds nature of this mini series throw you off, it is a must read for Dick Grayson fans and anyone else who wants something dark and different.  I am worried with Metal going on and Doomsday Clock looming, this will get overlooked.  Don't let that happen!

9.4/10

  2. I know we're only 2 issues in, but I think this mini is shaping up to be one of the sleeper hits of the year! And further proof we need Kyle Higgins on more books ASAP!
