It's a shame this book is ending, not just because I love both Damian and Jon so much, but because it never seemed to get going enough to be one of the better nooks at DC.  It's fine if you disagree with me, but I think early on, this book got bogged down a bit too much with the leads bickering and name calling.  Now that the boys are becoming best friends, it's been great...and it's ending.  So sad.  So, how was this issue? Let's find out…

The issue opens with a bit of trouble at Lexcorp and then quickly switches over to the Super Sons HQ.  While we do get back to the bickering nonsense, it's interrupted by an attack by Kid Amazo!

The fight ends up being mostly Jon versus a trash-talking Amazo until Damian shows back up and rams an escape pod into the baddie. The victory doesn't last long as Damian tries to save Jon and then vice versa before Jon is pulled down into the ocean depths and Damian is grabbed by...Cyborg!

It's pretty cool seeing Cyborg here and after hearing Jon is in trouble, the two go off to find him.  The readers, however, jump right to him and see he didn't drown, but also find out more about what's been going on with Kid Amazo since we last saw him in the first arc of this series.  It's a bit of a man versus machine story (is that why Cyborg suddenly showed up in this issue?!?) that is a little convoluted, but it gets us to where we need to be.

After some big talk, we get to the cliffhanger that shows that Amazo is sitting at the big boy table for Thanksgiving Dinner and while it's cool, it makes me wonder why he even went after Superboy to get to this big moment.

This was a very quick read.  There is a bunch of action scenes and a little story setup, but not much else.  I didn't really like Kid Amazo the first time, but this version does up the ante a bit.  My biggest gripe is that we didn't get much of our young heroes together.  That's all I really wanted to see before this series end and this issue, Tomasi separated them.  I don't get it.  I really hope there is more to next month's finale because, besides the excellent art here, there isn't much else to get excited about here.

Bits and Pieces:

Maybe it's because this book is ending soon, but I expected a lot more from this issue.  It looked great, but the story was mostly action with a bit of setup sprinkled in for good measure.

6.5/10

  1. There's only one issue left? This arc could at least stretched out for two more issues. Which makes sense now why this felt so rushed to get us to the third act. I did enjoy seeing Damian have a heart for once. Long live Super Sons! 7/10
