Is Batman / Superman: World's Finest #25 Good?

In a special 25th milestone issue, Mark Waid gives you two stories for the price of one (and a little bit more), with the always-excellent Dan Mora on one tale and guest artist Steve Pugh on the other. On the whole, this issue is a winner, focusing on magical shenanigans, plenty of wit, and fun.

Joker / Luthor: World's Vilest

Lex Luthor breaks Joker out of Arkham to help him interpret a map that drives its reader insane. Since the Clown Prince of Crime is already on the Nutty Banana Cuckoo list, Luthor strikes a deal to share the wealth and power from the supposedly ultra-powerful artifact to which the map points. Joker's gift for irrational thinking unlocks the clues in the map, leading the World's Vilest to the Rock of Eternity and a special jewel within, but Luthor soon learns that promising the craziest man alive his heart's desire was a poor deal.

Clever, witty, and and entertaining. Waid's story shows why, contrary to previous pairings, Luthor and Joker make the world's oddest couple and that their partnership was never meant to last. Guest artist Steve Pugh does a commendable job bringing the pair to life, but Pugh's layouts are the star of the story.

Impossible (Prologue)

Batman and Robin research and train in the Batcave when Batman's more eclectic artifacts come to life (a giant Abe Lincoln from the giant penny, the robot dinosaur, etc.). Quickly deducing the presence of chaos magic, Batman moves to summon Superman, but Supes suddenly appears through a portal pushed by a herd of wild and prehistoric animals. When the fight to control the chaos gets deadly serious, the World's Finest work together to put the animals back in their place, just in time to confront the likely culprits - Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk. But are they the villains or the victims?

This prologue sets up the next World's Finest adventure in perfect fashion. New readers not familiar with the magical sprites get a ruthlessly efficient look at what kind of trouble their brand of magic causes, and Mora's art is (as always) top-tier. As prologues go, this one hits the nail on the head to get readers and intrigues for what comes next.

Bits and Pieces:

Batman / Superman: World's Finest #25 delivers the goods with an amusing team-up between Lex Luthor and Joker that turns out exactly as you'd expect, in the best way, and the setup to the World's Finest next adventure. In all, this was a highly amusing issue.
