Lame Of Thrones
The quest to destroy Perpetua's throne continues with our Death Metal Justice League team but it doesn't look like they're going to complete it because at the end of the last issue, the guard of the throne, the larger than life Omega Knight seemed to sneak up on our heroes and blast them all to hell. If that wasn't enough to bet against a happy ending, we also have the Martian Manhunter/Batman amalgam, Mindhunter standing in the way of a win. Let's jump into this issue and see how the hell anyone survived last issue's cliffhanger and if it's a satisfying answer at that. Let's check it out.
It's kind of disappointing to me that after having that giant devastating cliffhanger that looked liked everyone we loved and cared for might have been blasted away by the Omega Knight's cyclops blast that in this issue....... everyone is just fine. Not only fine, but the same blast that they were able to escape from and not be affected by at all is the same beam that can take out Perpetua's Throne..... yet, you know, not hurt anyone else. Beyond that disappointment though, you have Cyborg, Starfire, and Lex Luthor M.I.A. for the majority of this issue so that Nightwing can wallow in despair for getting people killed, while Detective Chimp finds his courage in an invisible mechanical horse named Comet and Hawkgirl really brings most of the entertainment with her fight with the Mindhunter.
Yeah, it's the Hawkgirl parts of this book that kind of elevates this to something at least worthwhile, even if the writer for some reason thinks that Kendra Saunders is Thanagarian..... I don't get it. It is cool though showing the mental skills that Hawkgirl has acquired since she first fell in love with Martian Manhunter and seeing the skills that he taught her to take on a mental invader like this Mindhunter, not to mention that it was cool seeing the Throne of Perpetua as something that was actually made of Brainiac, instead of seeing Brainiac hung on the side of it with the Legion of Doom. In the end, though, I just wish that there was some kind of repercussion to our heroes essentially walking up to a powerhouse like the Omega Knight from the last issue because besides for Nightwing crying in his Cheerios about what he thought may have happened, there were no consequences here and it feels kind of odd, especially for how the issue ends.
All in all, the art in this issue still pretty decent but for whatever reason, I did find it hard to follow at times when Detective Chimp and Comet with its invisible field would snatch someone up. Even with the knowledge that they were out and about and invisible, it left me scratching my head at times with what was going on. Beyond the art though, the story was just okay. The Throne being depicted right for the first time since we started this was appreciated, and so was the spotlight on Hawkgirl to make up the majority of our book, I just wish that they wouldn't have called her Thanagarian. Ultimately, this issue is a mixed bag of cool moments and eye rolls as you make your way to the end and I can only hope now that our team has achieved their goal that the storytelling can become interesting again because this issue sacrificed a lot to get to where it needed to go.
Bits and Pieces:
The direness of last issue's cliffhanger is thrown out the window here as our heroes are just fine and the Omega Knight is only a fraction of the threat that he once was until he needs to be powerful enough to achieve our heroes' goals, but there are some interesting things this issue dealing with Hawkgirl. I just wish the storytelling felt more even in its pursuits to see our heroes achieve their goals. The art was decent overall and I hope going forward that this book can become a bit more interesting since these characters being together should be one of the most interesting aspects that DC has going on right now.\
