Cat Ornaments And Where They Came From
It's been two months since our previous issue of Batman/Catwoman and in that time..... Well, I kind of forgot that this was a book but beyond that, within that time I'm sure many people have wondered about Helena Wayne's pursuit to find out if her mother Selina killed the Joker in the future, what was going on with drunk Selina in the past and what was the next move in killing the Joker when it looked like Selina decided to team up with Phantasm in our present. Hopefully, all these answers are here since we had to wait so long so let's jump into this issue and check it out.
As I stated in the opening and as you probably know if you've been reading this series, our story is made up of three timelines, and throughout this series we've had varying degrees of...... let's say progression in our story or even enjoyment value and this issue is no different in that the only thing that really felt like it did anything substantial was the present-day stuff where Batman goes to rescue Selina from Phantasm, not really knowing that she doesn't need saving in the long run, but it's in this time period where we get a decent reaction from Batman about why he doesn't kill and I know it's an old trope that so many people play with and has probably become old hat at this point, but there was something in this interaction that felt at least a little fresh when compared to...... Well, anything else in this book. It's just too bad that this moment is the defining moment of the book and there was very little else to take away.
As for the rest of the book, Selina decorates a Christmas tree with Joker as she tells us about how she stole the ornaments and in the future old lady Catwoman goes on patrol with her daughter and they don't do much in this section beyond making fun of the new names of villains in Gotham, rehashing what we've gotten previously, but at the end, we might have something that leads somewhere but since we're halfway through this series and haven't gotten much of anything of substance so far....... I kind of doubt it.
All in all, the art remains the main draw of this book because it's some of the best art coming out of DC Comics at the moment and every page just looks amazing through and through....... but the story is just three timelines of nonsense that just wants to meander about until the end and that style of story is something that just constantly leaves you wanting more and this issue is no different. Selina Kyle continues to look awful throughout this series, which is weird for how previously it seemed like all Tom King wanted to do with his Batman series was place her on a pedestal and I'm not sure who this is pleasing ultimately. This is a weird book and maybe it will all be worthwhile by the end but as of right now I'm really just here for the pretty pictures.
Bits and Pieces:
While the art remains something I love in this series, the story is just chock full of nonsense that doesn't want to do anything but make Catwoman look crappy (IMO) and while that may change down the line, we're halfway through this book and nothing about it really feels all that thought out or compelling in the long run. I can only hope that things change for the second leg of this story because amazing art will only take you so far.
