Land of The Eternal Broken Watch

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

When we last walked through the pages of the Justice League Dark, we saw that our heroes were seriously in trouble.  After the House of Wonder exploded........ It was a whole thing in Justice League Dark Annual #2.  So after the House of Wonder exploded our heroes found themselves in different places throughout......... the outside of time.  So Zatanna was before time, Frankenstein, Andrew Bennett, Swamp Thing and Nightmare Nurse were after time and now we'll check out where Madam Xanadu, Deadman and Black Orchid wound up.  Time is weird.  So let's check out what's going down in this issue of Justice League Dark............which I'm terribly late reviewing....... But it's my last catch up review, so that should count for something........ Okay let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our story begins with Zatanna finding the root of all power in her place in this outside of time land........ and when I say root, it turns out I'm being serious because she's located a tree that she believes she can tap into and find a way to get herself home....... Well at least she has that going on, Madam Xanadu, Deadman and Black Orchid are in a place that is driving them mad.  It's some kind of place where time is inverted on itself and causes them to splinter all over and making their splintered selves go mad............ Pretty much you have a shit ton of our heroes trying to tear their actual selves apart.......... It's pretty terrifying, if you put yourself in their shoes.  Eventually Xanadu breaks her mind away from the madness and finds an exit for her and her friends.

Outside of the weird inverted madness place, our heroes find another section of................outside of time?  I don't know, but where ever they are time doesn't exist and we have a weird paradise where people aren't born and don't die, they just are............ again I don't know.  Our heroes are welcomed into this clan but are told that they can't venture off to the black floating ribbon of time that the people of this place call............ Get this, The Beyond Beyond.  I wonder where our heroes will go.

Obviously, after Madam Xanadu tries out her magic and realizes that it won't work in this world, Deadman and Black Orchid go to the Beyond Beyond, but not obvious at all, Madam Xanadu goes and falls in love with one of these timeless strangers.  They talk, they eat, Madam Xanadu gives into his requests of feeling what time is like by sharing her very essence of time within her and like all love........... it ends.  Wow, was that cynical enough for you?   Nah, but really this guy is given time and it actually causes him to die of old age almost instantly.  Poor Madam Xanadu.

In the end, Black Orchid and Deadman fight off some Beyond Beyond guards to see if they could find a way home but the fight is interrupted by a ship sailing out of the ribbon of darkness.  That's right, if you remember Frankenstein, Andrew Bennett, Nightmare Nurse and Swamp Thing sailed away into nothingness to escape their Langolier world and now that they are in this world, Xanadu doesn't know if she caused it by introducing time.  As the issue closes we see that Zatanna might have made some headway into connecting with the magical tree in her place before time, but I think she might have taken the connecting a little too far because it appears like she's now actually a part of the magical tree............ This could be something good, I don't know.......... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

That's it for this issue of Justice League Dark and man is it getting out there.  I mean I can get behind the JLD being separated and trying to find one anther and getting home but what's the deal with all this space outside of time?  Before time, after time, inverted time, no time........... I don't get it and they all seem to have their own rules that DeMatteis wants you to know.  Even though I love the art, I don't think this is an issue that people need to read to get their JLD kick.  Just buy bulk in back issues and wait this time storm out.  Hopefully after next issue our heroes will find their way back home and we can get back to the normal weirdness of this series instead of the current type we've been getting.

Bits and Pieces:

I haven't really been a fan of this Amber of The Moment story line from the get go.  It's overly complicated and besides for getting a ton of JLD characters together, I don't know how any of this will affect our heroes in the future.  Now I'm used to weirdness in this title, but this is a little too weird for me.

6/10
