Future State: Wonder Woman #1 takes a look at the near future where Yara Flor, a Brazilian Amazon and titular character, fights mythical beasts and makes deals with mythical creatures to bring her deceased Sister Warrior back from the dead. After defeating a hydra to "borrow" its horn, Flor is confronted by the protector of the jungle, Caipora, for poaching protected creatures. Rather than argue, Flor agrees to leave the horn in exchange for passage to the Underworld via Caipora's magical powers. What follows is a surreal trip into the Underworld that looks more like a magical version of NY's Penn Station than an ancient limbo. It's unfamiliar but reminds you of something else. It's weird. It's Future State.

Here we are at the end of Death Metal, and while I have been hot and cold with the main book and the many tie-ins, I did find myself excited to read this.  I mean, it's the big thing, right?!?  While I wish that DC Comics didn't play so coy with what is coming around the bend, this finale will surely do the heavy lifting and steering, so how can you not be a bit interested in how it is all wrapping up?  Don't answer that since I will jump into my review right now and tell if you should give this a gander..

A Little Swampy

Written By: Ram V
Art By: Mike Perkins
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: January 5, 2021

If you haven't read the final issue of Death Metal, as I haven't yet, then you really don't have to for this particular book. It sums it up quite nicely about why we're seeing different futures in different times and timelines in Future State without spoiling what actually happened. The future for this timeline with Swamp Thing? Mankind just seemingly vanished after the heroes did what they did, cities are desolate and crumbling, and Swamp Thing is roaming the Earth looking for any survivors. But he's not alone.

Harley Quinn is one of the books with its main character intact for Future State, and I am glad.  I don't need a new version for two months since we will be going back to Harleen in March when the main books return.  That said, I was wondering what Stephanie Phillips was going to do with the Cupid of Crime in a darker Gotham where masked vigilantes are a no-no.  It looks like she will let Harley use her smarts to track down villains with a twist.  Let me explain...

The hands of creation warned of a lurking threat that needed people to stand against it in this fresh new reality at the end of Dark Nights: Death Metal and while we've jumped into the future for the next two months, it seems that Generations Shattered will be our big connection to what the new Multiverse looks like and to show us how it's different than any Multiverse or timeline continuity that has come before it.
