My Hero Academia Vigilantes Volume 5 Review

Story: Hideyuki Furuhashi
Art: Betten Court
Translations: Caleb Cook
Lettering: John Hunt
Cover Price: $9.99
Release Date: July 2, 2019

Review by Luke Hollywood

(Spoilers ahead!)

After the climactic showdown with the series' first major antagonist in the previous volume, this next volume of Vigilantes was always going to have a tough time following up. Volume 4 featured such a decisive finish to a lot of plot points we've been building up since the beginning of the series, and with the Bee User Hachisuka off the board, and the potential for her opponent (and mentor to our protagonist) Knuckleduster to take a leave of absence from the main plot, This volume definitely feels like it's plotting a course through new territory for the series. It might be a bumpy ride at first, but will that trademark Vigilantes quality hold through for this new story arc? Read on to find out!

Adventures of the Super Sons #12 Review

Dump It Up

Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Art team: Carlo Barberi, Matt Santorelli, Protobunker, and Rob Leigh
Release Date: July 3, 2019
Cover Price: $3.99
Reviewed by: Jon Wayne

We have finally reached the end of our time with the Super Sons (at least in this iteration, with Jon as a 10-year-old) and its been a roller coaster. I’m being serious when I say that because this series - which only exists because passionate fans demanded it is brought back after Brian Michael Bendis’ takeover of the Super-books - had super high highs and sadly low lows. Peter J. Tomasi played around with some very fun ideas, created some really fun new characters, but the plot meandered to the point that lost my care for the book, especially in the middle. Though as of late it seems like Tomasi has rediscovered some of the magic at least, can he see it through to the end? Let’s find out.

The Green Lantern #9 Review

Written by: Grant Morrison
Art by: Liam Sharp, Steve Oliff, and Tom Orzechowki
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 3, 2019

I have come to an impasse with this book.  I want to like it, but I also really want a coherent, cohesive story to get me there.  I just don't see that coming any time soon so I am just going to go with the flow.  Let's see how this works out...

The Wild Storm #24 Review and Spoilers

Written by: Warren Ellis
Art by: Jon Davis-Hunt
Colors by: Steve Buccellato with John Kalisz
Letters by: Simon Bowland
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 3, 2019

Well, it is with a mixture of excitement and sadness that I metaphorically crack open this final issue of The Wild Storm. It's been an absorbing if at times meandering, journey through this new updated version of the Wild Storm universe, but can we end with the kind of satisfying bang the patient build-up of the last twenty-three issues positively demands? Let's get our collective skates on and find out, eh?

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #3 Review

Raph v Raph

Writer: James Tynion IV
Art Team: Freddie E. Williams, Kevin Eastman, Jermy Colwell, Tom Napolitano
Release Date: July 3, 2019
Cover Price: $3.99

The great philosophers named Powerman 5000 once said "this is what it's like when worlds collide", so Tynion, Williams, Eatman, and Colwell are doing their best to bring those words to life as two companies, two sets of heroes/villains, and two universes have been revealed to be mashed together. Thankfully a black and white Raphael is here to save the day but will his brothers from another fishbowl listen to his sage words of advice? Let's discuss.

Deathstroke #45 Review

Family Affair

Written By: Christopher Priest
Art By: Fernando Pasarin, Jason Paz, Wade Von Grawbadger, Jeremy Cox, Willie Schubert
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 3, 2019

It's time to move on now that Slade Wilson is taking a dirt nap, but from what we saw in the last issue, it doesn't look like either Rose or Jericho are willing to take that first step.  Rose seems like she wants to put her father's assassin affairs in order and Joey...... Well, Joey looked like he was losing his mind for his involvement with his father's death.  Hopefully with Slade gone now though, his kids will become well adjusted members of society......... Yeah, I'm not holding my breath either so lets jump into this post funeral issue and see what this brother and sister are planning to do with their lives.  Let's check it out.

Batgirl #36 Review

Burning Down The House

Written By: Mairghread Scott
Art By: Paul Pelletier, Norm Rapmund, Hi-Fi, Andworld Design
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 3, 2019

Sadly, this marks the end of Mairghread Scott's amazing run on this character, where she not only got rid of the nonsense that had been plaguing Batgirl ever since she started hanging around Burnside, but she also made me care about the character again.  It's over now though, but lets see how it ends as Barbara continues to take on the Terrible Trio, while she's being muscled out of Gordon Clean Energy.  Let's check it out.

Lois Lane #1 Review

Headline News

Written By: Greg Rucka
Art By: Mike Perkins, Paul Mounts, Simon Bowland
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 3, 2019

Lois Lane continues to make headlines and now we can read all about it in her very own series starting with this issue.  There's not much to say about this going in except that it takes place within our own continuity, but the timeline seems a little off to me.  Either we're at a point where Lois hasn't told Clark about her time in space with Jon yet or there's something that she didn't tell us before in the pages of Superman.  With that being said, it's also odd in this that Lexcorp is mentioned, but from what we saw in DC's Year of the Villain, Lexcorp has been dissolved...... and destroyed.  So yeah, there's some weird timeline aspects to this, but let's find out how the story plays.  Let's check it out.
