Green Arrow #84 (1994) Review

"Strange Attractors" or "The one where Green Arrow kills a lot of dudes Rambo style"

Writer: Alan Grant
Artists: Jim Aparo, Gerry Fernandez, Buzz Setzer, John Costanza
Cover Price: $1.75
Release Date: February 1st, 1994

Review by Joey Casco of TheWineStalker.net

Because we just got a puppy that we named Ollie after Green Arrow, how could I not make my next Retro Review a Green Arrow issue? So I looked for some GA from my favorite comic era, the 1990's, and came up with this one.

Green Arrow isn't really even on my Top 5 list of favorite heroes but I do have an enormous appreciation for the character. He's a street level crime fighter, social justice warrior, the black sheep of the Justice League, and always the bravest and most badass of everyone during big events like Zero Hour, Identity Crisis, No Justice, etc. I can already tell you that this blonde rat terrier will do his name proud.

Destroy for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hello, berserkers! In this episode, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) check out a more recent offering by Marvel Comics: Indestructible Hulk #12 by Mark Waid and Matteo Scalera! After that, our completionists tell the rest of the Indestructible Hulk's story--right up to its final issue! **NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Looks like this is the last issue involving Jeff Lemire, and his duties will be assumed by Gene Luen Yang next month. I like both of these writers a lot, but coming from the bloated, stagnant series we’ve had thus far, I’m concerned for what this comic book will hold. I can say for sure that consummate professional Lemire will set things up nicely for Yang! So let’s see how he does it in The Terrifics #14, which I have reviewed right here!

Martian Manhunter #4 Review and Spoilers

Charnel Red

Written by: Steve Orlando

Art by: Riley Rossmo and Ivan Plascencia
Letters by: Deron Bennett
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: March 27, 2019

Last month's issue of this distinctly uneven series was coherent and fairly compelling. The story of J'Onn's arrival on Earth and his adoption of the John Jones persona presented us with a sympathetic and honorable character more in keeping with past iterations of everyone's favorite green alien than the morally compromised and duplicitous character we got in issues 1 and 2. The issue's focus on a more traditional J'Onn was decidedly welcome after two issues of partly Mars-based shenanigans; the absence of Mars and the issue's consequent tonal consistency made for a much more enjoyable reading experience and I found myself becoming cautiously optimistic that the potential for this series might just be realized. So, we're back to Mars this issue, aren't we?

Yes. Yes, we are…

If anything goes wrong with what Darkseid has in store then he will not succeed, so she wants to take out even just one of his pawns to spoil everything. So, let's take a look at this month's vapid cover blur... waitasec... "10/10"?

Ten out of... are ya, are ya kidding me here?

Okay friends, real talk here, comics as an art form and industry have been around for, what, eighty-odd years?  In that time, there's probably been... I dunno a dozen, maybe two dozen "Perfect 10" issues. Lemme tell ya... Books of Magic, Volume Three, Issue whatever ain't one of 'em!

Reviewers, we really need to dial it back when slinging these "Perfect 10's".  At this point, they been rendered completely meaningless.  I get that it's supercool to get a pro-retweet... and free swag is swell, but we really need to take a step back and remember what reviewing is supposed to be all about.  We're not doing this to placate creator egos, or curry favor with publishers.  If that's all you're worried about, you're doing it wrong.

You're not helping anybody (except yourself)... and in fact, I'd suggest that you're only making things worse.

Remember... If everything's a 10/10... then nothing is.

Written By: Joshua Williamson
Art By: Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero
Letters By: Steve Wands
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: March 27, 2019

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

While I may have been a little harsh on the previous issue, I still will say that I didn’t particularly enjoy it all that much. However, readers that aren’t that familiar with the character of James Jesse probably enjoyed it and in the end, that’s who the issue was for. However, now we are going to be officially starting a new arc for The Flash and I’m actually excited. I wasn’t too fond of the Force Quest arc that we got and now that we are done with The Price crossover, we can begin a new Flash story. Obviously, the Trickster will play a big part of this book but honestly, the possibilities are endless. So, let’s just jump into it and see where it takes us.

By now, all you readers know that the entirety of Weird Science DC Comics was very excited when it was announced G. Willow Wilson would be the new writer on Wonder Woman. She was well established over at the “house of ideas” and coming off a character-defining run with Ms. Marvel, so everything seemed to be trending upward for the most iconic female superhero in the industry… But by now you also know that regardless of the reviewer, WSDC is bored with Wilson’s run and very disappointed given how hyped we were. That said, can this be the issue where Wilson turns things around? Let’s check it out.
