Happy Green Lantern Day

Today is February 8, 2014 so it's Green Lantern Day.  Get it?  2-8-14.  As in Sector 2814.  Ok, so it's a bit of a stretch, but I always love to find a reason to celebrate.  Here is a pretty cool picture to help get you in the mood.

Happy Green Lantern Day Everyone!

Stormwatch #28 Review

Written by: Jim Starlin
Art by: Allan Jefferson and Cliff Richards
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 5, 2014

Dead Book Hovering

What's better than dinosaurs and hover boards?  The answer, nothing.  Nothing, I tells ya.  So when the last issue of Stormwatch ended with just that I was hyped.  This is what I was hoping for Stormwatch.  Don't hide from the 90's Jim Starlin, embrace it.  You already have alien villains named Extremax and the Kollective so let's go all the way.

So, Stormwatch #28 opens with Extremax and Jenny Soul riding hover boards on Prehistoric Earth with Dinosaurs chomping at them.  Awesome.  Then...it's over.  No more dinosaurs.  Instead they are in Space fighting the Kollective.  Damn it.  This is Stormwatch in a nut shell.  Starlin gives a glimmer of hope of something cool and then snatches it away.

Swamp Thing #28 Review

Written by: Charles Soule
Art by: Javier Pina
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 7, 2014

Saved by Poor Dental Hygiene

Since taking over Swamp Thing, Charles Soule has shaken things up.  The Seeder has come and gone and last issue Alec destroyed the Parliament of Trees.  He has sole control over the Green and things couldn't be better, right?  Well, that wouldn't be fun, now would it?

Swamp Thing #28 starts out as just that.  Fun.  Alec has returned to Earth as the Avatar of the Green, but he's brought some friends along for the ride.  Three former Avatars have returned with him, but in human form.  You know what that means?  Road Trip!  Yep, it's Mardi Gras time and it's pretty hilarious.  Charles Soule has recieved kudos for the humor he brings to Red Lanterns and we see it here.  Swamp Thing babysitting these three is bound to be a great time for issues to come.

Red Lanterns #28 Review and *SPOILERS*

Written By: Charles Soule
Art By: Alessandro Vitti
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 5, 2014

The Testicle's Been Squashed.

Last issue of Red Lanterns we saw Guy, Skallox, and ZZ make their way to Earth.  There ZZ and Skallox were accosted by Shadow Thief, and it looks like Guy's going to strike out with his best girl Ice.  It might have to do with the fact that he looks like a ginger version of Hobo With A Shotgun, but who am I to judge?  Another bit of the story finds Bleeze and Rankorr face to face with newly ringed Atrocitus, Dex Starr, and a new Red Lantern.  A good point to note as well is this is part two of the Green Lantern/Red Lantern flip book issue, so if you want the full story you should really read Green Lantern #28 first.  On with the show.

I Expected More Fisting

Oliver learns more about his history on the Island, but also what type of Man his Father was (is).  Diggle doesn't want his old job back, but his new one seems oddly familiar.  Komodo makes a play at the Outsider hierarchy and it looks like this War is being fought on at least a couple of fronts.

Release Date: February 5, 2014

Supergirl's Dressed To Kill.

Last issue of Green Lantern, we saw some dire times for Hal, and the Corps.  A Durlan shape shifter infiltrated Mogo, impersonated Hal, and sent a message out to the universe.  A message which might not make you a big fan of the Green Lantern Corps.  While the message went out, multiple sector houses of the Corps., were attacked, and our heroes are pretty much at their lowest point.  Hopefully Hal can get his shit together, and lead this Corps. back to greatness.  This issue is the special flip book issue, which will add Supergirl to the mix of overwhelming problems now facing Green Lanterns, so hopefully Hal doesn't start going bald due to stress.

Release Date: February 5, 2014

Lookin' For A Game Changer?  This'll Be Your Huckleberry.

Before we were interrupted by Cyborg's tune up in the last issue of Justice League, we saw Sinestro finally return, and it looks like he's going to put Power Ring in his place.  We also had Luthor's Injustice League about to square off against the Secret Society, with a little help from Batman, and Cat Woman.  So let's finally get what we've been waiting for, and find out who dies, and who switches sides.

Batman: Joker's Daughter #1 Review

Written by: Marguerite Bennett
Art by: Meghan Hetrick
Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: February 5, 2014

Still a Mess, but a Better Mess

Ok, we have to agree on one thing before we start.  Batman: The Dark Knight #23.4 never happened. The issue Eric Shea from Weird Science gave a 2.0/10 is just a figment of our imagination.  When Eric said to save yourself the money and buy a different book, he was talking about a book that didn't exist. When you think of Joker's Daughter, please think of this book because while it is far from perfect, it's so much better than a book that doesn't exist.

Batwing #28 Review

Written by: Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray
Art by: Eduardo Pansica
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 5, 2014

That Hurts Me Just Lookin' At It

I was not the biggest fan of last issue and it's Gothtopia tie-in.  I actually ended the review asking for my Batwing back.  Listen, I'm not too conceited to think that Palmiotti and Gray listened (or am I??), but my wish came true.  Not only has Luke left his Flying Fox persona far behind, but Eduardo Pansica is back for art duties.  They did this all for me, I just know it.

Earth 2 #20 Review and *SPOILERS*

Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 5, 2014

I Wonder What Darkseid's Take On Creationism Is.

So we just got done the big bad annual of Earth 2, where we got definitive info on Batman's origins.  Thomas Wayne if you missed it.  This issue seems to take place before the annual, or it's a missing scene within this story, but that really doesn't matter, I'm just telling you because I wondered myself when reading it.  So last issue Parademons had come once again, and swarmed all over Earth.  Our heroes plans were to get a hidden Kryptonian back to the Batcave, so they might have a secret weapon to throw at the now raging Superman.  Let's see if Earth 2 can be saved.

Larfleeze #7 Review and *SPOILERS*

Written By: Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis
Art By: Scott Kolins
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: January 29, 2014

I Feel The Need, The Need For Greed.

Alright so last issue we saw Larfleeze show the Orange Lantern Corps. who's boss.  By showing them I mean, he left them to die on a barren planet.  We also saw Stargrave and The Wanderer spying on The Council of Ten, and trying to trick them to infiltrate their ranks in order to find out if they plan on war.  So all that sounds like fun, but The Wanderer's plan might just have a bump in it, because now that Larfleeze is free of the torturous Orange Lantern Corps., he wants his butler back, and is willing to search the universe to find him.  So let's jump into deep space in the DCU, and find out what's going on in the world of Larfleeze.

New Superman Creative Team Announced.

DC's been teasing a big announcement, and today they finally let the secret out.  On DC All Access we were told that not only would Geoff Johns be taking over writing duties on Superman, but John Romita Jr. would be joining the creative team.  Which just blows my mind, thinking that Romita Jr. would be working for DC.  You just have certain creators in your head and when you think about them you get a certain feel.  For example John Romita Jr., Spider-Man.  But I guess if this turns out well we might start thinking of him with Superman in mind.  So this all begins this summer, and I can't wait to see what these two have in mind for the Man of Steel.

Adventures of Superman #41 Review

Written by: Max Landis
Art by: Jock
Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: February 3. 2014

The Sound of One Hand Clapping part 2 of 2

Max Landis and Jock wrap up their two part Joker talks with Superman story and I am conflicted.  I did enjoy some of the dialogue, it just didn't fit the Joker or Superman.  I really enjoyed Jock's art, just not as much in this issue as the last.  After reading this issue I couldn't help feeling disappointed that this meeting should have been something more.  Something more memorable.  Instead we got a eagerly pathetic Joker failing to move a confidently smug Superman.

Double Teaming Blight.  Yeah I Said It.

In the last chapter of Forever Evil: Blight we saw Pandora become the host of the light within all of us.
Which you'd think would be a formidable opponent against Blight, but it seems to be a stale mate.  I'm just going to get this out of the way right here so I don't have to bring it up again.  As awesome as it was that Pandora became this force of light, it's gone now, and we're not going to see it again.  So it's back to square one with the fight against Blight.  Well less than square one because Blight killed Phantom Stranger last issue, and as we start this one we find out Blight killed Pandora as well.  So hopefully our favorite Dark team can get their shit together and finish the job.  Let's find out.

Just For The Hell Of It Mondays. 2/3/14

One of my favorite things to ever come out of Cartoon Network, was a small short that aired in between shows.  This short has stayed with me, and still makes me giggle to this day.  So for this "Just For The Hell Of It Monday", I hope you get a chuckle as well.  Like most things that are older, and on the intronets, you've most likely seen this, but I also think you'll get a chuckle anyway.  For people who haven't seen this, where the hell have you been?  This is hilarity at it's finest, and simplest.  Boosh!

The Bat Men part 5 of 7: Breaking Points

Bruce and Terry are behind bars and to pass the time, Bruce tells the story of Kirk Langstrom and his wife, Francine.  Meanwhile, the task force Barbara Gordon tried to stop is in full seal team six mode.  The book ends with the task force confronting Man Bat and me wiping a tear from my eye.

Weird Science News: Week of January 29, 2014 Edition

Yes, it's Super Sunday Big Game Day and everyone is getting ready for the Super Bowl Big Game. Personally, I'm making pulled pork sandwiches and watching the Super Bowl Big Game with my five boys. Yes, you read that right...I love pulled pork.  I will make my Super Bowl Big Game predictions after the news, but I guess to get to that, we have to first get...

On With the News
That is one cool umbrella

The Penguin will be the first "Gotham" Villain

The Latino Review reported this week that the first villain featured on the Fox show "Gotham" will be the Penguin.  Latino Review is a Weird Science favorite for their soothsaying abilities.  In fact, I'm sure they reported I was going to say that seconds before I wrote it.  They are that good.  Casting is still underway for the part of Oswald Cobblepot, but I suggest my favorite Penguin, Ted Knight, from the 1960's Batman Cartoon.  What?  He died in 1988?  I guess that's why the "Too Close for Comfort" reunion is taking so long.  Someone call Jim J. Bullock and tell him it ain't happening.  Or better yet, cast him as a the Penguin. I'm an idea man, people. That's just what I do.

Jessie Eisenberg is No Billy Zane but Jeremy Irons is the next Micheal Caine

Lex Luthor? I don't see it.
You might have heard whispers that Micheal Cera...I mean Jessie Eisenberg, has been cast for the minor role of Lex Luthor in that small budget indie movie Batman vs Superman (or is that Batman vs BigGameMan?)  My cowriter and Titanic fanboy, Eric, has been begging anyone who will listen to cast Mr. Billy Zane as Lex for years.  I guess DC doesn't really care what a guy who loves speech-to-text devices thinks about casting movies.  Little do they know that this was the man who was going to introduce the world to the pink sock. If you don't know what I'm rambling on about, don't fret, neither do I.   Where was I?  Oh yea, Jeremy Irons is Alfred.  My favorite Jeremy Irons performance?  Profion in the Dungeons and Dragons movie.

Abandon All Hope

Really Aquaman, really?
In what should be a standard warning for every book written by Ann Nocenti, DC released a teaser two page spread featuring select Dark characters and the caption, "Abandon All Hope and Enter into the Dark". It looks like a fun little party with Pandora, Phantom Stranger, The Question, Etrigan, Socks, Amethyst, the Spectre, Swamp Thing, Sargon, Nightmare Nurse, and jeez there are so many people in this damn spread, John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Madame Xanadu and Frankenstien.  In a dick move, on the bottom left hand side you can see Aquaman trying to pick Pandora's pocket.  We see you Aquaman, We see you.
DC hasn't announced full details on what this party is all about, but my guess is it's going to be Dark and not have tons of Hope.  Unless you hope that Aquaman gets caught, because We see you Aquaman.

This man doesn't have enough to do already

Earth 2 Weekly

Yep, rumor has it that there will be an Earth 2 weekly title.  Maybe it will be called Earth 2 Too.  Remember, idea man.  If it happens it will join Batman Eternal and Future's End as new DC weekly titles.  There has been no announcements on the creative team, but I'm sure Tom Taylor doesn't have anything going on and would love to increase his workload.

Stiles from Teen Wolf has a Brother Who had a Birthday

Nice shirt Stiles, indeed
I stumbled across this on the intranets.  It seems that Stiles from Teen Wolf has a younger brother, Harry, who celebrated his twentieth birthday on Saturday.  Man, it seems like yesterday that Stiles walked into Scott's kitchen with his "Obnoxious: The Movie" t-shirt.  We all used to get a laugh over Stiles' shirts. Boof, Chubby and myself still get a chuckle over them when we visit Coach Finstock in the nursing home.  He's doing better so keep your fingers crossed.  By the way, if you think I'm talking about the MTV Show, I'll cut you deep.  You've been warned.  What?  It's Harry Styles' birthday and he isn't related to Stiles Stilinski?  Someone is getting fired.  Get me Ted Knight on the phone, dammit!

Super Bowl Big Game Predictions

Here are my stone cold locks for tonight's game:

  • My sons will all bail on the game by the middle of the second quarter
  • My Wife will cry during at least one commercial
  • Eli Manning will be shown and he will be making this face
  • I will have gas from pulled pork.  It always happens.
  • Seahawks will win 24-17

Another week, Another News.  Now that's a saying I might trademark.  Idea Man...out
