The Flash is in an interesting place. Despite having set up one of the most intriguing stories just a few issues ago, we haven’t gone anywhere with it since. I say it a lot so I honestly feel like a broken record. There’s too much set up in comics nowadays. I completely understand that writers want to set up their stories properly so that there are proper weight and consequence to what happens afterward. I understand that feeling and I totally respect it. That being said, instead of taking half an issue or even an entire issue, writers currently are sometimes taking two issues or more to set up what turns out to be a rather mediocre story. This might be fine for readers who only buy trades, but for comic fans that want to go to their local store every week and spend their money on these issues, it’s starting to feel like a waste of money. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is going to change anytime soon. So until that changes, let’s hope that this book at least can finally capitalize on the intrigue that this story started with. Let’s jump in and see.

Batman #95 Review and *SPOILERS*

Hostile Takeover

Written By: James Tynion IV
Art By: Jorge Jimenez, Tomeu Morey
Letters By: Clayton Cowles
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 21, 2020

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

I’ve been pretty high on this Batman book since it was taken over by Tynion. The first storyline where Batman faces off with The Designer was really intriguing and while there were a couple drops in quality along the way, overall the story has been really good. However, at the end of the whole thing, it was revealed that the entire thing was a lead up to this new Joker War and while I enjoyed the story that lead us here, I’m a little hesitant when it comes to my expectations. I am worried that we are going to fall into the same traps that we had in the previous run. There’s nothing wrong with having a long story that is segmented into different parts but we’ve had all of that for the entirety of Rebirth with Tom King. Now, I’m actually a big defender of Tom King, but even I was ready for something a little more traditional when his story ended. I figured that’s what we would get with Tynion, but it seems he wants to take the story in a similar direction. I’m hopeful but worried. Let’s jump into our latest issue and see where we go from here.

Batgirl #47 Review

You Are Killing Me!

Written by: Cecil Castellucci
Art by: Robbi Rodriguez, Jordie Bellaire, and AndWorldDesigns
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 21, 2020

I have not been digging what Cecil Castellucci has brought to Batgirl, and it seems as I am not the only one.  If you haven't heard, DC has canceled this book with issue #50 being the last issue. It sucks, not because I will miss reading about Unearth or tales of the living metal, but because Batgirl is a great character and one of my favorites.  I said it sucks, but maybe a breather will do the character good because it has been a hot mess for a while and only worsened when Castellucci stepped in.  With that, perhaps she can end on a high note with some Joker War tie-in issues.  Let's find out...
