Slots #2 Review

"Drrrrrrrrooooop the coin right into the slot"

Vegas baby Vegas. The Bright Light City is the perfect setting for this tale of Stanley Dance. Dance is like that uncle that used to visit about once every two years when you were a kid, filled with glamour and tales of his travels, and always ready to slip you a handful of dollars out of his money clip. "Go get yourself something, kid" he would say with a wink. As a kid you were in awe, but as an adult you find that though the charm is still there you know this is someone who's gonna break that promise he's just made to go with you to the ball game the following day. Despite seeing through the routine though, you still get dazzled slightly. Anyway, its a bit like that with Stanley Dance.

Review by: Andrew McAvoy

Good old Earth. When will its inhabitants learn that there is no such thing as a "good deal" with aliens. They do not come in peace, they don't just come to "phone home". That's right folks, the Truth may be out there, but aliens are best kept in a galaxy far far away because on Earth people can sure as hell hear you scream. With those words of warning out of the way lets dip into see Earth's representatives roll the dice one more time with our Extra-Terrestrial invaders.

Hero's Journey

Written by: Kurt Busiek
Art by: Mike Norton
Colorist: Peter Pantazis
Letterer: John G Roshell
Cover Price: $3.99

Last issue introduced Andy Merton, a small-time crook who, thanks to the theft of a magical amulet and the companionship of a ludicrously cute corgi called Hank, has turned away from crime and now fights it in the guise of anthropomorphized canine G-Dog. The issue also ended, however, on the kind of gut-wrenching revelation that really pulls the rug from under you and makes you desperate to read more. So, does Busiek deliver a killer conclusion to this two-parter? There’s only one way to find out…

DC Comics Best Covers of the Week 11/8/17

What You See, What I See

Welcome back to another list of the greatest and most best comic book covers coming from DC Comics this week! There were a lot of comics that came out on 11/8, but sadly I wasn't moved by many of them. There was, however, an interesting development in variant covers, one that I find most welcome! So let's take a look at the definitive list, shall we?

Justice League of America #18 Review

The Trouble with Tribbs

Written by: Steve Orlando
Art by: Hugo Petrus, Hi-Fi and Clayton Cowles
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

After the nonsense that was the Panic in the Microverse, I don't know if I was just looking more for anything that wasn't that or just the exit.  Sure, I took this book over from Eric a while back, bit that doesn't mean I have to like it, right?  It's not like I am asking for much...a coherent story, some decent dialogue and for Steve Orlando not to mess up characters and continuity along the way, but somehow he never seems to be able to do at least two of those each issue.  So, what things does he do this week to drive me nuts?  Let's find out...

Wild Storm: Michael Cray #2 Review and SPOILERS

Killer Queen

Written by: Bryan Hill with Warren Ellis
Art by: N Steven Harris and Dexter Vines
Colours by: Dearbhla Kelly
Letters by: Simon Bowland
Cover Price: $3.99

The notion of the Wild Storm universe featuring twisted versions of the regular DC universe’s heroic characters is an interesting one and last issue’s introduction to a psychopathic Oliver Queen was elegantly and engagingly executed. With Michael Cray taking it upon himself to enter Queen’s dome of death and face being hunted by Queen in a lovingly rendered replica of the island on which Queen honed his skills – and presumably lost his mind in the process – the stage is set for a mouth-watering showdown. Let’s see how it all pans out…

Detective Comics #968 Review

Looking for the Exit

Written by: James Tynion IV
Art by: Alvaro Martinez, Raul Fernandez, Tomeu Morey and Sal Cipriano
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

While I really was hoping for a more emotional return for Tim Drake, I am still digging this arc.  However, my interest is mainly from seeing the Tim Drake of Tomorrow and wondering what's coming next.  I mean, the guy shows up, says he's going to kill Batwoman and then activates Brother Eye!  What's next, using the Grays Sports Almanac to gain riches beyond the imagination?!?!  While that would be awesome, I'm pretty sure that's not the direction that James Tynion is going for.  I guess I should stop with my outdated movie references and get on with my review...

I think the tale of Ragman being spun in this miniseries so far would play well as a Broadway musical.

Think about it, DC Comics. Have a look at my review for Ragman #2, maybe it will help you to come up with some melodies.

Mister Miracle #4 Review

My Mind is Gone

Written by: Tom King
Art by: Mitch Gerads and Clayton Cowles
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

It is no secret that I may be the most critical reviewer on this planet when it comes to Mister Miracle.  I have been called names that question my IQ, sanity and worse.  Oh well, another day at the office, I suppose.  I still stand by my opinion of this book, however.  It may turn out to be the best thing since sliced bread, but so far, I have been a bit let down on an issue to issue basis.  Granted, I think Tom King is writing the story with a big twist reveal coming down the pike, but until then, it's hard to put a finger on whether or not what we are getting is great or mediocre, important or frivolous.  You see, while other reviewers are busy looking up synonyms for "awesome", I am trying to find the light bulb over the head moment that will show me that this story is in fact "one for the ages".  Do we get that moment in this issue?  Let's find out...

Since there was that awful song “Superman Dat Hoe,” about ejaculating on the backs of women and then putting a sheet on them to create a sort of cape, do you think the world is ready for the “Superwoman Dat Dude” response track? I’d proffer that being “Superwomaned” would be to have your genitalia set on fire and/or electrocuted. I hope someone makes that song! Check out my review of Superwoman #16 for some inspiration!

Ooh, a tie-in with Metal! And it’s one of my regularly-reviewed comics! Of course, this crossed over with Aquaman, too, so I shouldn’t be too elated. But I am enjoying this event, and I think I bring a little more positivity to its cross overs compared to those other two manic-depressive shlubs on the site! Which isn’t to say I will like this issue, just that I probably won’t eviscerate it. Or will I??? You’ll have to read my review of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #32 to find out!

Suicide Squad #29 Review and **SPOILERS**

Red Dawn Has Broken

Cover Price: $2.99
On Sale Date: November 8, 2017

**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Maybe it would do to have a successive lineage of Suicide Squads stretching back to ancient times, like…oh, I dunno, a coalition or “league” of particularly extraordinary fellows—gentlemen, really. You could throw mythological figures and gods on various teams, have them be the hidden hand that has silently guided history since time immemorial. Still, that wouldn’t explain why they made the Task Force X of the late 1950s a bunch of unpowered dopes fighting space monsters for patriotism. No matter. Let’s take a look at my review of Suicide Squad #29, ahoy!

Harley Quinn #31 Review and **SPOILERS**

Blundered Deal at the Wonder Wheel

Writers: Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti

Cover Price: $2.99
On Sale Date: November 8, 2017

By the time you read this review, Election Day will have come and gone in America. So you can measure the real world up to this comic book and let me know which one you think is more bananas. My money is on the Third Dimension, these days! Have a gander at my review of Harley Quinn #31 while you mull it over!

The Oz Effect comes to a close with this issue and with it, hopefully some answers to whether or not Mr. Oz is in fact Jor-El and what's going on with that big bad outside threat...........  Yeah, with Doomsday Clock being so close to release I doubt we'll get that, but some answers beyond just people being pieces of shit would be nice.  When we last left Action Comics, Superman was still dealing with a world in chaos from the agents of Oz, but after stopping an attack that would have decimated Metropolis, Superman finally discovered that this mysterious Mr. Oz and the man claiming to be his father were one and the same and with that knowledge........ it was time to get some answers.  Let's jump into this issue and see what Jor-El is willing to give up and see how this finale leads into the Doomsday Clock.  Let's check it out.

Red Hood and the....... Suicide Squad?

Written By: Scott Lobdell
Art By: Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, Taylor Esposito
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

In our previous issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws we saw the Gotham Knights getting all pissed off that the Outlaws were doing their job better than them and because of this....... they kidnapped Bizarro, which led our heroes on a rescue mission for him, but even though it seems that Bizarro was all about being caught, you know, since he's super smart right now and nothing really gets by him without him knowing about it, the Gotham Knights kicked our heroes' asses and that's how we left the issue.  Let's jump into this and hope that we see some redemption or explanation about why all of that went down.  Let's check it out.

Wonder Woman #34 Review and *SPOILERS*

Sibling Rivalry

Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Okay, now that we've gotten past that odd prequel story from last issue, hopefully we can just jump into this and get the answers about Jason that we've been waiting more than a year to find out about...... because if we don't, I'm going to be a grumpy Gus.  Grumpy Gus' aside though, in case you haven't been following this arc, let me catch you up.  We've seen Grail, Daughter of Darkseid systematically take out the children of Zeus so that she can feed their life force to Darkseid so that he can become the threat that he once was.  Now though, Diana has found out about her brother and his location so hopefully with the Wonder Twins teaming up they'll have a chance against this threat.  Let's jump into this issue and check it out.

Titans #17 Review and *SPOILERS*

Time To Stop Yourself

Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

The big bad and the traitor of the group has been revealed............ and it's Troia?  Yeah, that was a weird ass cliffhanger last issue, but hopefully once this arc wraps up it will all come together and make sense why Mister Twister, Key and Psimon were all working for this strange Donna Troy and to get to those answers, first we must jump into this issue and see how our heroes react to this person who was apparently locked away and found her way out by the villains of this story beating down her door with emotions............. Man, I hope all of this makes sense in the end.  Let's check it out.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #16 Review and *SPOILERS*

The Daughters of Gotham

Written By: Julie Benson, Shawna Benson
Art By: Roge Antonio, Marcelo Maiolo, Deron Bennett
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

The men of Gotham City are out of luck because a virus is spreading through the streets and only leaving women unaffected.  Thankfully, we have not only Batgirl and the Birds of Prey on the case to find out who could be behind such a virus, but we also have Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Spoiler, Orphan, Gotham Girl, Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Harley Quinn and while not all of these guest stars make sense in this arc, it's still kind of appreciated because we've never seen this title face a threat this big before and it's kind of cool.  Let's jump into this issue and see if the women of Gotham can get to the bottom of what's effectively getting rid of all the men in the city.  Let's check it out.

Supergirl #15 Review

Written by: Jody Houser and Steve Orlando
Art by: Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, Michael Atiyeh and Steve Wands
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

I am a big Supergirl fan.  She is one of my Top Ten comic book characters period and that's why I have been critical of this run.  I want her to have a book, but I want it to be good and this just hasn't been good.  Hopefully, the addition of Jody Houser will turn it all around.  Did it?  Let's find out...

Batman: Lost #1 Review

META(L)

Art by: Doug Mahnke, Yanick Paquette, Jorge Jimenez, Jaime Mendoza, Wil Quintana, Nathan Fairbairn, Alejandro Sanchez and Tom Napolitano
Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: November 8, 2017

I don't know if it has all been by design, but this month we get the Batman Lost issue instead of the next chapter of Metal.  If you are like me, you've been enjoying the hell out of Metal...but that doesn't include all the tie-ins.  My main problem is that I am still struggling to wrap my head around the big Metal story and instead of getting me closer, the tie-ins are either making things harder to understand or not doing anything except taking money out of my pocket.  I hope Batman Lost does a bit more.  I hope this is an integral part of the story that ties me over until Batman #4 next month.  Does it?  Let's find out...
