Deathstroke #6 Review

Written and Art by: Tony S. Daniel
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

An Eye for an Eye

Is it cliche to call Deathstroke a "Bloody Good Time"? Yea, I thought so too, but that sums up this book so well.  Sure, Slade's story of past sins and current troubles is pretty good, but the main draw each month is Tony Daniel's over-the-top, blood soaked art.  Severed limbs are the order of the day and Daniel is serving them up fresh and hot.  Thankfully, this week is no different.  Slade is still hanging out with Harley Quinn in Gotham City and you can just imagine what trouble those two can get into together.  Does Daniel end this arc with a killer finale or does Slade just limp off until June.  Let's find out...

Dan DiDio Explains DC Comics' Convergence Event

I know this may be old news to some of you out there, but I'm posting it anyway.  While the early previews of the Convergence titles didn't show much (Just go ask Greg Rucka...C'mon), I'm gradually getting excited for the Event.  I still don't know what the hell to make of it and I believe that the powers that be at DC are getting worried that I'm not the only one.  So, Dan DiDio released this video explaining things a bit.  Give it a watch and if you are one of the ten people listening to our podcast (It's not called Weird Out Loud, btw), we will be talking about this video and maybe Covergence in general on this week's episode.  We'll also be talking about Eric eating a whole bunch of food last night...that's what you call a sneak preview, folks.

Convergence: Nightwing/Oracle #1 Preview

Written By: Gail Simone
Art By: Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 8, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Just as they’ve finally been reunited, the romance between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon is sentenced to execution by Flashpoint Hawkman and Hawkwoman!

Do you know how nice it will be to see Oracle again?  The Barbara Gordon that overcame adversity and still managed to be a hero in the face of a handicap......... Yeah, it will be pretty nice.  Anyway though, seeing Dick and Barbara together again is fantastic and if they have to take on some "not exactly evil, but from another universe where they're beliefs skew with our own" Hawkman and Hawkwoman, well even better because I love every character involved here........ This should be awesome.

DC Television Round up: Week of 3/28/15

As one who is still in school, it's tough trying to get 3+ reviews out while trying to study. To amend for this, there will be posts weekly giving small reviews to each of the DC TV shows until the end of the school semester. Expect during the weekend i.e. the only real time I have free.

STARRING HEROES FROM CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS! With their heavy hitters sidelined, Elongated Man must lead the much-maligned “Detroit Justice League” against the overwhelming power of the heroes from the Tangent Universe!

Holy shit, it's Justice League Detroit and if that's not enough awesomeness and nostalgia to get you hyped for this book............ well, then there's also the Tangent Universe, but I have to admit that when the Tangent stuff came out, I had forsaken my love for comics in my attempts to............ How do I put this?........ Oh yeah, to get laid.  So I'm going to have to do some homework before Convergence gets started so I can wrap my head around the Tangent Universe......... Besides for my not knowing nonsense, I'm totally looking forward to seeing Justice League Detroit again.

Convergence: Hawkman #1 Preview

Written By: Jeff Parker
Art By: Tim Truman, Enrique Alcatena
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 22, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS! Hawkman and Hawkgirl put their Shadow War on hold as they face the might of anthropomorphic rat-men and bat-men in the deadly land of Kamandi!

It's too bad that we're straying away from Shadow War because I'd love to get back to that and see more of the Thanagarian Invasion instead of seeing our winged warriors taking on baddies from Kamandi........... Well, that's just me.... I'm not a fan of Kamandi but I'm sure there are people out that that can't wait to see anything about the last boy on Earth....... Really though, I love me some Hawkman and this solicit could have said the most ridiculous thing possible and I would still pick up this issue because I really feel that all of us don't get enough Hawkman in our daily lives.

Five Questions With...Viktor Bogdanovic

Hello everybody and welcome to another Five Questions With...  It is my pleasure to welcome Artist, Viktor Bogdanovic, to our site and I really do mean that.  In just six chapters of Batman: Arkham Knight, Viktor has won me over completely.  It doesn't happen often that an artist jumps onto the scene with the impressive force that he has and if you don't believe me, pick up an issue of Arkham Knight or head over to his Deviant Art page (HERE).  The guy has some scary talent.  Check out the interview below and then check out everything Viktor is involved with.

Batman: Arkham Knight #6 Review

Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: March 27, 2015

Strange Bedfellows

I have enjoyed the hell out of this Arkham Knight prequel comic.  The main reason is that this doesn't feel like a quick cash grab...no, this is an honest-to-goodness great Batman comic that just happens to lead into the upcoming Arkham Knight game.  That may not seem like a lot to some of you, but believe me, it is.  Peter J. Tomasi and Viktor Bogdanovic are combining to give readers something special and it's become a book I look forward to reading and reviewing every Friday night.  Did this finale of the second arc continue the greatness?  Let's find out...

Convergence: Swamp Thing #1 Preview

Written By: Len Wein
Art By: Kelley Jones
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 29, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS! The dome has cut off all the heroes from their powers – but what happens when Swamp Thing is cut off from his life source in The Green?

The Swamp Thing mythos is such a strange thing to follow through all it's incarnations and I have no idea how this will work but from what I've seen recently in the pages of Justice League Dark, when Swamp Thing gets cut off from The Green, he freaks the hell out and almost immediately dies....... Hopefully that doesn't happen here because for one thing, I don't know how you get 2 issues out of that and for another, I'm looking forward to seeing Swamp Thing kicking ass and taking names.

Convergence: Green Lantern Corps #1 Preview

Written By: David Gallaher
Art By: Steve Ellis, Andre Parks
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 22, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS! Say the Oath, save the world! If only being in the Green Lantern Corps was that easy. Hal has resigned, John is busy, and Guy is pissed. Together for the first time, they’ll save Gotham City or die trying!

I love the Green Lanterns and even though I can't wait to see these characters the way they were during Crisis, I have a hankering to see Guy Gardner rocking his Vuldarian DNA and his Warrior persona....... Yeah, that has nothing to do with this and not having that won't take away any of my enjoyment of seeing this book, but all I'm saying is........ What's up with some Guy Gardner Warrior?

Batman: Eternal #51 Review

Written by: James Tynion IV
Art by: Alvaro Martinez
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

'Cuz they're whose clues?

I've complained about this book for just about a year now.  I've yelled about the pacing, the convoluted plots, the lack of answers and the changing creative teams causing jarring transitions.  I would like to think that most of my rants were warranted, but I'm sure some of them came from frustration and fatigue.  I'm man enough to admit that.  I'll also admit that last week's reveal of Cluemaster being the Big Bad had me a little beside myself, but I wanted answers and that was a big one.  While I hoped to God that it was one last red herring, that seemed unlikely with just two issues left in the series.  So, I prepared myself for this issue and prayed that James Tynion would somehow make me like the reveal and enjoy Eternal's ending.  Did he succeed?  Sit down a spell and let's find out...

Rage Be Damned

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

It's been a hell of a ride as we've moved through the world of the Red Lanterns and now that it's over...... I don't know where I'm going to get my rage outlet.  Hopefully Guy Gardner returns in something during this summer and knowing Guy, he most certainly will.  He's like a bad penny, he always turns up........ I don't know what that expression means but I'll go with it here.  In the last issue of Red Lanterns, we saw Guy go up against a rage infected baby......... Well, a baby imbued with a manifestation of rage and after Guy got his ass kicked up and down the town, he finally overcame that teething terror and went on the road with the youngster in search of the lasting rage of the Atrocitus War.  Let's see where our hero ends up with his new sidekick and see how Red Lanterns will end.  Let's check it out.

Where We Belong

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Isn't it crazy that we only have one Annual after this issue and it's all over?  I mean, we went through so much in order to get Damian Wayne back to his rightful place next to Batman and really, back in our lives and it's all over after next week.  Yeah, we'll have Damian's solo title but it's the Dynamic Duo that I crave and luckily we still have the issues that we have..........  I WANT THIS TO CONTINUE!!!  Okay, in the last issue of Batman and Robin, we saw Batman losing his mind as he tried to keep up with his super powered son and eventually taking him to the Justice League Watchtower as a way to keep an eye on him while he was dealing with League business.  As the issue closed we had our selves an adventure in the making that would have Damian teaming up with the greatest team of superheroes in the world and a big smile on my face.  So let's see Damian's first outing with the Justice League and see what the future holds for our Boy Wonder.  Let's check it out.

Mind Fuck

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

It's finally here, the comic that started it all......... Well, at least for all the characters that we've been reading about month after month.  The infamous cursed comic that will destroy the world and infect our minds....... Okay, I'm not sure that I want to read and review this anymore....... but me being a cunning man of action full of musk and guile, I'll take on that challenge and do my best to try and make sense of this Morrison mind fuck.  Alright, let's quit all the jibber jabber and get into Ultra Comics and see what all the hubbub has been about.  Let's check it out.

Catwoman #40 Review

Written by: Genevieve Valentine
Art by: Garry Brown
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

Secrets and Lies

I don't know how many times I can push this book to anyone who will listen, but I will at least one more time.  Genevieve Valentine has quietly turned this book from a bit of a joke to a must read crime drama and Selina Kyle into the strongest, smartest, kick ass female character in all of comics.  I say "quietly" because while other books get the headlines because of new outfits or questionable variant covers, Valentine and Garry Brown just keep giving fans what's important...a great book. This issue continues the story of tough choices, double crosses and the Family Business.  Is it up to par with the rest of the run?  Let's find out...

Aquaman #40 Review

Written by: Jeff Parker
Art by: Paul Pelletier
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

Mommy Dearest

"All good things must come to an end", Grandpa Werner used to tell me while I sat on his knee and...actually, that never happened.  My Grandpa was an awful man who hated me, but in my dream world, he would have told me that and I would have thought of those times as I read this issue.  Aquaman #40 is all about endings...it ends the Maelstrom story, but also ends Jeff Parker's and Paul Pelletier's time on the book.  I'm sad to see them go, but at least they are leaving on a high note.  This Maelstrom story has been epic and showed me once and for all that Jeff Parker was a great choice to take this book over when Geoff Johns' left all those issues ago.  I'm going to push the sadness aside and get on with my review.  Come join me...

Facing The End

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Oh man, it's that time again where we grab our sliding devices.......... You all remember Sliders right?  Anyway, it's time to grab that device and head on over to Earth-2 so we can get our World's End on and after reading last week's issue, I'm hyped as hell.  The art and story were both fantastic and besides for Dick Grayson and Alan Scott being a bit dopey, I was happy with everything we got last week.  To catch you up if you need it, the story was all about the survivors of Earth-2 preparing to evacuate the planet after Green Lantern had punched a hole through the Apokoliptean barrier....... Oh and we can't forget Val-Zod and Power Girl taking on Darkseid.  Let's hope that all that awesomeness continues as we jump into this issue.  Let's check it out.

The Flash #40 Review

Written by: Robert Venditti and Van Jensen
Art by: Brett Booth
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

Very Fast and Pretty Furious

I have had a lot of fun with this current Flash arc.  Future Flash coming back to right his biggest wrongs while Barry is stuck in the Savage Lands of the Speed Force has been a hoot and I couldn't wait for this issue to see how it all ends.  Well, Venditti, Jensen and Booth do not disappoint.  This finale is action packed, heart wrenching and drop dead gorgeous.  It also has a couple of developments that make me want June to come tomorrow.  Seriously DC, why are you making us wait two months for our stories to continue?  I'll help you guys move if you bring pizza and beer and give me Flash #41 sooner.  No?  Okay, let's talk about this issue...

Five Minutes From Now

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

During our last foray into the future, we witnessed the end......... of pretty much everything as Brother Eye became fully operational and started making it's Brother Eye Borg zombies all over Terrifitech to stop our heroes from shutting him down.  If that wasn't enough to keep you interested, we also saw the return of the Brother Eye Batman/Joker monster from the further future make his final appearance before Batman Beyond dropped him off a building.  It's just too bad that Batman Beyond took a lot of damage in the process and as our issue closed we saw the death of our savior from the future.......... and all looked lost.  Let's check out this issue and see if our heroes can turn things around and hopefully fight the future.

STARRING HEROES FROM ZERO HOUR! Aquaman has lost his home, his powers, and his hand – but now he faces his most difficult challenge: a battle to the finish

Good old rage filled, hooked handed Aquaman......... Oh, how I've missed you.  You gotta understand, this was the Aquaman during my heyday of comics as a kid and this is just nostalgic as hell for me.

Convergence: Plastic Man and The Freedom Fighters #1 Preview

Written By: Simon Oliver
Art By: John McCrea
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 29, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS! You have to see this story to believe it! Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters are on the gallows in a New York City taken over by Nazis, when robot super heroes attack from Futures End and enemies become allies.

Now this solicit is just teasing me right?  The Freedom Fighters and Plastic Man fighting characters from Futures End is like Christmas and Chanukah combined together with all that awful religion stuff left out!  It's win win is what I'm saying in a terribly offensive way and the more I see of Convergence the less bitchy I'm getting and digging what I'm seeing.

Anarky's End

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

In the last issue of Detective Comics, we saw Anarky take Mad Hatter out of his cell and man, it didn't look like he wanted to be best friends forever.  While Anarky was at it, Batman and Bullock had themselves a hell of a hunch when they used Mad Hatter's previous ranting and raves to track down a old boarding house that apparently holds the key to solving not only the question of who Anarky is but to those children skulls that Batman found in the first issue to this story arc.  It all gets wrapped up here, so let's check this out and see if Batman can save Mad Hatter from Anarky's vengeance as I wrap up my last late review....... Hurrah For Me!

Convergence: Supergirl Matrix #1 Preview

Written by KEITH GIFFEN
Art by TIMOTHY GREEN II
Cover Price: $3.99

Release Date: April 15, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM ZERO HOUR! What do Supergirl, Lady Quark and Ambush Bug have in common? Well ... nothing, really. But that doesn’t stop them from appearing in this story together. You are SO welcome.

Zero Hour Supergirl, Lady Quark and Ambush Bug? I'm in!  If you've been reading Justice League 3000 (and you should be), you'll recognize the Keith Giffen solicit and the awesome Howard Porter cover. Something new for me, though, is the great cartoony interior art by Timothy Green.  I also like Timothy because instead of going with Jr, he goes with II.  I like it...very classy.  This story looks like a bunch of fun and there is always room for that.

Release Date: April 15, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM ZERO HOUR! Ted Kord, Martian Manhunter, Fire and Ice star as the levity of the JLI team collides with the severity of the world of Kingdom Come!

I may not be the biggest Martian Manhunter fan out there, but I loves me some Ted Kord.  I also love Captain Atom and Red Tornado and wonder why the above solicit gives them no love.  I'm sure that fans will show them they are not forgotten come April 15th.  I can't wait.

Catwoman #40 Preview

Written by: Genevieve Valentine
Art by: Garry Brown
Cover Price: $2.99

Release Date: March 25, 2015

It’s the furious finale to “Family Business”! Will Selina remain the head of Gotham City’s criminal underworld, or return to her life as Catwoman? Will she even survive this battle long enough to make the choice for herself?

I know that there has been a bunch of hubbub recently about female characters, variant covers and pizza fries.  Okay, the pizza fries thing may not be trending, but to anyone looking for a strong female character that takes no guff from anyone, get this book.  Genevieve Valentine has taken a character known most for her sex appeal and turned her into the biggest, baddest hero in Gotham and Garry Brown's art is gritty and dark and fits the story so well. This "Family Business" story has been so good and I can't wait to see what happens in this finale. By the way Genevieve, if Eiko dies, I will never forgive you!

STARRING HEROES FROM ZERO HOUR! When Kingdom Come’s floating fortress of New Oa threatens Metropolis, it’s up to Amanda Waller to assemble a team of Metropolis’s deadliest villains to stop it.

Okay, this is one of the Convergence titles I am looking froward to the most.  Why?  Well, I am a Frank Tieri fan, I love the Suicide Squad, but those pale in comparison to the main attraction here...THE WALL!  Yes, big, beautiful Amanda Waller is back for at least two glorious issues.  I can't wait.

The Hatter's Comeuppance

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

In this late review of Detective Comics #39, I'll try to remind everyone what was going down so to have some context to what you're reading....... Yeah, this isn't going to be easy.  Now in the last issue we saw Anarky causing a ruckus throughout Gotham when he sent everyone a Anarky mask as an early Christmas gift.  So what does everyone do in Gotham when they're sent a mask?  Why they go crazy with anonymity of course.  Riots, bank robberies, pretty much anything that one could do with a mask and it all boils down to a kid getting shot because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time...... wearing a mask.  Now even though we all know that Detective Yipp took the shot, when we ended the last issue it seemed like Gotham was ready to simply pin it on the Batman.  Let's see if the Dark Knight can beat the shooting wrap and take down Anarky before anymore awful parents let their kids out of the house wearing masks.  Let's check it out.

Light Up The Darkness

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

All right all you "Dark" fans, this is it for our Trinity of Sin and their very brief series.  Now I have to admit that even though I love each of these characters, I have not been a fan of this series at all and this isn't a title that I will really miss with the exception that I have no idea when we'll see any of this trio again............ and man is that sad as hell.  Okay, in the last issue of this series, our Trinity found themselves trapped within the Redemption Box, where at first it seemed like a living hell, but once they overcame their guilt of........... Well, actually being the Trinity of Sin, the world was reshaped into a paradise that our trio had to decide to leave in order to fight for the Earth once again.  Let's see if these heroes can finally work together and pull the world out of Nimraa's darkness.  Let's check it out.

Oh shit!  I think this is the moment I've been waiting for since half of this story was told.  It's not that I haven't enjoyed the Futures End ride this year, it's just that I don't want my heroes to face this awful future.  I can't wait for this or the final issue because I need to have resolution......... I need it!

It's a shame that this book didn't find an audience because it was a lot of fun and had such a classic feel.  Maybe if Didio and Giffen gave it a more cartoony look and a controversial variant cover, things would have been different.  I kid...or do I?!?!

Can Alan Scott harness the power of the planet as Green Lantern to stop the invasion of Earth-2?

I don't know what this solicit is saying because Alan Scott has told us over and over that he's out of power, but you know what?  After reading the last issue of this series, I am back on the World's End trolley and expect nothing but greatness for this and the final issue............ Man, I hope I don't get let down, like that time I thought that people were lining up to get into An American Werewolf in Paris and when I got up to the theater it turns out they were just lined up for Titanic............. and also An American Werewolf in Paris was awful.......... Don't be An American Werewolf in Paris World's End........ Don't.

Sinestro #11 Preview

From the pages of SINESTRO: FUTURE’S END #1 comes the Apex League! We’ve seen the kind of destruction they’ll bring down on the Sinestro Corps in the future. Now, learn how – and why – that conflict begins! Plus: Sinestro discovers a change that will pave the way to his ultimate goal!

I was about to say the one thing that I like about this book but the truth is, I like everything about this book....... but that one thing that I wanted to point out is how cool it is that this title and New Guardians are actually exploring the stories that were told in the Futures End tie-ins.  Yeah, it's unneeded because we saw in New Guardians that the future can be rewritten but man do I appreciate it......... Especially since the future can be rewritten because I really don't want my heroes and anti-heroes to have to face that awful awful future.  Can't wait to read this.

Justice League Dark #40 Preview

Written By: J.M. DeMatteis
Art By: Andres Guinaldo, Walden Wong
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

They’ve been to the edge of time and back again, but now the arcane forces with which they’ve fought will make one last attempt at eradicating the Justice League Dark from existence. Major changes are in store as the team faces its final fate!

I know that this says "final fate" and all but I was really surprised that I didn't see anywhere for this solicit that this was the final issue...... Which is a shame because I really love these different magical characters getting together and forming a team, even if it doesn't always work out for them.  Hopefully this issue goes and makes DC wish that they'd never cancelled our Dark team and we can see some more of them in the future......... Even though it's unlikely.

Feeling Guilty

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

During the last issue of Trinity of Sin......... Which was a awhile ago because I'm late on this review, we saw our damaged heroes enter the cave housing the Redemption Box, in an attempt to use the box's power to reverse Nimraa's magic and revert the Earth back to it's not so dark incarnation.  It's too bad that Nimraa was fast on their case and did everything that she could to stop the Trinity, but in the end our pseudo heroes laid their hands on the box and entered the world within it........... Some how redemption means that these three characters get crucified for all their trouble.  Fuck it, the Earth is staying dark and monstrous because I'm not getting crucified....... I guess it's a good thing that it doesn't fall on me to save the world.  Let's check out this issue and see if the Redemption Box holds more for our heroes than pain and maybe gives them the power to save the world............ With one issue left, I hope so.

I haven't done this column for quite a while now.  I would chalk it up to me being lazy, but in my defense, we have started our podcast and it has taken up a huge part of my weekends.  On second thought, I've been pretty lazy.  Well, what better week to start back up then the crazy one we just got through.  You couldn't take a step this week without hearing about the whole Batgirl variant cover controversy (including a certain podcast with weird and science in the title) and everyone seemed to have an opinion and were happy to share it (including two guys named Jim and Eric).  Let's try to all take a deep breath, let the anger flow out of us, open up your heart and let the sunshine in.  Sing it with me:

Mommy told me somethingA little kid should know
    It's all about the devil
And I've learned to hate him so
    She said he causes trouble
When you let him in the room,
He will never ever leave you
If your heart is filled with gloom

So let the sun shine in
    Face it with a grin
    Smilers never lose
    And frowners never win
So let the sun shine in
    Face it with a grin
Open up your heart and let the sun shine in

Deathstroke #6 Preview

Written and Art by: Tony S. Daniel
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

Preview via Comicvine

Pulling himself together after his brutal showdown with Batman and Harley Quinn, Deathstroke must face an opponent he prayed would never reappear in his life! If you think Slade Wilson is bad, wait till you see his father!

Deathstroke has been a slow burn story with awesome art, but this issue looks like it may amp things up to eleven.  Eleven!  Harley Quinn can do that to you and it looks like the Slade/Harley tag team will keep the decapitated head count going up, up, up.  Bloody good show.

He-Man: The Eternity War #4 Preview

Written By: Dan Abnett
Art By: Pop Mhan
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 25, 2015

This is it: The battle you’ve been waiting for! She-Ra vs. Hordak! In order to retrieve the Eye of Chrono, She-Ra must defeat her adoptive father. Her only hope for success lies in the power of the Sword of Protection!  And maybe a little luck!

This solicit isn't lying.  The cliffhanger from the last issue has left me wondering what's going to go down here and I can't wait to see it.  Pretty much, if you've been reading Eternity War, you'll know how bad ass this story has been and for anyone who hasn't read it yet.......... Well, get on the trolley.
