Five Minutes From Now

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

During our last foray into the future, we witnessed the end......... of pretty much everything as Brother Eye became fully operational and started making it's Brother Eye Borg zombies all over Terrifitech to stop our heroes from shutting him down.  If that wasn't enough to keep you interested, we also saw the return of the Brother Eye Batman/Joker monster from the further future make his final appearance before Batman Beyond dropped him off a building.  It's just too bad that Batman Beyond took a lot of damage in the process and as our issue closed we saw the death of our savior from the future.......... and all looked lost.  Let's check out this issue and see if our heroes can turn things around and hopefully fight the future.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with Batman, Mister Terrific and Atom fighting off Brother Eye's security and just barely making it out of the control room alive when they're met by the hoarding Brother Eye zombies.  It seems like this trio of heroes luck just won't run out because even though we saw Terry McGinnis die in the last issue, Batman Beyond appears and blows those borg-ed out zombies back to cyber hell.  We quickly learn though that this iteration of Batman Beyond is simply Tim Drake sporting the future Bat suit and he intends on taking the time device and going back to stop Brother Eye as Terry McGinnis had originally intended.

Well, of course now that Batman is involved, he wants to be the one to go back and save the world and at this point I half expected the two to decide with rock, paper, scissors like Val and Earl in Tremors but the A.I. Alfred tells Batman that the device is calibrated to Terry's weight and Tim is closer to it than Bruce.  So after the team of heroes make it to the roof and call Firestorm in to charge up the time device's battery, we get the big reunion we've all been waiting for.  Tim recognizes Madison right away and he has himself some second thoughts about hurdling through time all willy nilly now that he knows his lady love is still alive.  As all of us Tim Drake fans know though, Tim's a hero and he's going to make the heroes choice.

In the end, after a quick goodbye, Tim is thrown back in time into the Brother Eye satellite that is about to send a beacon to the Earth-2 refugees, bringing them to Earth-0.  After a bit of logic where Tim tells Brother Eye that he can't send the beacon to them because it will destroy the world in the future, Brother Eye decides against sending the beacon and to be sure of Earth's survival, activates it's self destruct device.  As a last sort of gift........ I guess you would call it that.  Brother Eye somehow knows how to send Tim back to his own time and as the issue closes, the future has been adverted and Tim is sent back to the future............. but to what future?......... We have no idea because man does it end on a goddamn enigmatic cliffhanger.

That's it for this issue of Futures End and man was I on the edge of my seat the entire time waiting to see how this story was going to play out between Futures End and what's supposed to happen to the Earth-2 survivors.  As it looks right now, everything has changed and I couldn't be happier......... Hell, I don't think I could be even more hyped to see how World's End is going to play out now......  So this issue's ending is a twofer of awesomeness.  While I loved the story and can't wait to read the final issue, I do have to say that the artwork left a lot to be desired and I don't know if the artistic team was rushing to get this done but it certainly feels like it.  I don't know if anyone else feels like this but to me, story trumps artwork every time and the writers definitely brought their A game to this issue.  I can't wait to see what next week's final issue has in store for us.

Bits and Pieces:

Everything that we've been dealing with during the past year is all up for grabs here as shit has gotten real.  It's the second to last issue and man are the writers bringing "it" as this story concludes.  I hope everyone is still reading Futures End because the payoff is here and on top of this being an excellent installment to the story, it hypes the hell out of the final issue next week.. Go get your future on before it ends.

8/10
