Tales From The Dark Multiverse: Wonder Woman: War Of The Gods #1 Review

The War Rages On

Written By: Vita Ayala
Art By: Ariel Olivetti, Trish Mulvihill, Pat Brosseau
Cover Price: $5.99
Release Date: December 1, 2020

It's time to head on back down into the Dark Multiverse, where Tempus Fuginaut will put on his best Rod Serling impersonation and tell us a beloved story and show us where it went wrong in that particular dark Universe. This time around we're dealing with the Pantheon slugfest that was the War of the Gods and while this is a big story that doesn't get mentioned as much, even though it was a Crisis level story, it was a bit bloated with twenty-one tie-in issues and ultimately felt a like DC at the time just tried to cram too many things into this story, leaving it a bit convoluted and a bit over-written. That being said, the basis for the story is still interesting and led to some big things for our heroes. Let's jump into this issue and see how things go wrong for Wonder Woman in her fight against Circe and Hecate. Let's check it out.

The Batman book has seemingly bounced back from the Joker War arc. While we are still dealing with some of the fallout, the stories that we are following are pretty interesting with lots of different players involved in various ways. I’m not saying that the book is perfect, it is far from it, but I’ve been enjoying this current story arc, at least for the most part. There are some things that I question about the way that this story is going. Clownhunter is clearly playing a vital role but is also very outclassed when it comes to the heroes and villains that are involved. Due to this, his character seems really weak, but also volatile which lends itself to some interesting interactions. I would like for Ghost-maker’s backstory to be better fleshed out so that as readers we can better understand his motivations, which at this point mostly remain a mystery. We know his goals but not what drives them. Regardless, I’m interested in how this book moves forward, so let’s jump into this latest issue and see where it takes us.

Tom King Being His Most Tom King

Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: December 1, 2020

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

HE’S BAAAACK! A few months since Tom King left the Batman book to James Tynion IV, he has now returned with a Black Label series focused upon the Cat and Bat. Now, I’m a bit torn on this whole series for a couple reasons. First off, I would actually consider myself to be a fan of Tom King’s. Some of his stories are legitimately some of my favorite in comics (Vision comes to mind). That being said, when his run with Batman finally came to a close, I stated that I felt it was time for the run to come to an end. There had been plenty of talk about him reaching 100 issues with the character but especially after a few very bad story arcs, I was ready for something else and it seemed to me like a lot of people felt similarly. However, for those that did love his run, he promised this series to finish his story. So now that I’m reading this I’m torn because I don’t know which Tom King I am going to get. Am I going to get the Tom King that I love? The guy who began the Batman Rebirth title with such a great story? Or will I get the Tom King that I grew tired of? The guy who I felt relief when he finally left the title? I’m unsure, but I’m here to find out. Let’s jump into the new series.

Welcome to December, the beginning of winter and for those who have seasonal depression, it might just feel like an Endless Winter, that our heroes will be facing off against in this mini-event. Going into this series you don't really need to know anything special if you've been reading DC Comics lately because beyond some wacky continuity, the biggest thing that seems to be featured here is the Bendis era change of Superman moving his Fortress of Solitude from the Arctic Circle to the Bermuda Triangle. With that, Winter is here, and let's find out what all the hubbub is about.
