DC Comics Best Covers of the Week 12/13/17

Balloon is the Word

Hey everyone! Another week of comics, another week of covers--but this week, there were some real humdingers! Covers, I mean...I don't speak to their contents. At least not in this weekly article! DC Comics pulled a dirty trick and use a device I love to cram this section full of covers: word balloons on the front! I can't get enough of 'em, they taste like Silver Age breakfast cereal. Let's see what five covers made the cut this week!

Detective Comics #970
Guillem March
This is really an homage to the Bronze Age covers of Gene Colan and Neal Adams, all creepy as hell with gigantic villains taking over the whole space and leering at the reader. Only thing I would change here is that the word balloon should be knocked out white, but those gnarled wizard hands in the center fit the bill perfectly.

Flash #36
Barry Kitson & Hi-Fi
There's a mystery to be solved--and it's introduced on the front cover! This is what we talk about when we say a comic has "value." You should be into the book before you even open it up! Otherwise, this cover is pretty standard stuff, but the accusatory word balloon got me.

Action Comics #993
Dan Jurgens, Trevor Scott & Hi-Fi
Now this cover looks more like a direct homage to a cover from the late 1980s-1990s...and that's probably because it's drawn by the incredible Dan Jurgens, who can join (as far as I'm concerned) the likes of Curt Swan and Jerry Ordway on the short list of folks that wield a "definitive" Superman. Booster Gold and some word balloons too? Sold.

Suicide Squad #31
Tony S. Daniel, Danny Miki & Tomeu Morey
The skeletons in spacesuits remind me of Morrison and Burnham's Nameless, or maybe like something from a 1950s sci-fi movie. I like that Tony kept it simple and used only three members of the Squad, instead of trying to crap more in there. This is just an expertly-rendered image, colored really well.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #34
Francis Manapul
Wow. It's almost unfair to put a Manapul cover at the top, but then again it's almost unfair not to. Here's all our faves looking dynamic as fuck, with some coloring that is out of this world. See what I did there? This takes place in space so it's already out of this world! Man I am brilliant without even trying. So yeah, this is an amazing cover and the interior is nothing to sneeze at, either. Give it a look.
