Nightwing #70 Review

Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: March 18, 2020

I know that most fans of Dick Grayson want to leave Ric behind and get some Dick back in their lives.  Hey, I want Dick as much as the person, but I also want to get something satisfying out of Ric while we're stuck with him.  Is that too much to ask?  I don't think so, but let's get on with the review...

We start the issue off with Richard admitting he's a mess even as he does a cool ass free fall from a helicopter.  We do get a mention that the false William Cobb memories are more robust than the Bruce Wayne ones, so I guess we still have some time before we get Dick.  That's a bummer, but we have the memory crystal, and you know what else we have?  A bunch of recap that drives me nuts in this book.  I said it before...nobody is jumping on this book right now!  It's just us loyal Nightwing fans who have been here from the start, and we know all of this, so please stop and use the real estate to fix Ric!

We then head off to visit with the Nightwing Squad and get recap from them as well.  At least they admit they're not good at this Nightwing thing.  I mean, Zak must have his own wing at the hospital with how many times he's been there!

Well, that is just Zak, Colleen, and Hutch because Sap is out patrolling, looking for the Talon.  Unfortunately, what he finds is much worse.  I won't spoil it, but it's kind of easy to figure out with based on the cover of this issue and the cliffhanger of the last.

Back with Ric, we get more recap and a little action that sets up a good, but disturbing scene after Ric leaves to find Bea.  Back at the Prodigal Bar, Ric does get Bea's help, but we also get more recap.  Seriously, this is getting ridiculous.  The issue does end with an exciting cliffhanger, but after twenty-plus pages of spinning our wheels, I can't be that jazzed for it.

I feel bad this review is so short, but nothing much happens in this issue.  That might be an exaggeration since the cliffhanger is big, but if you can steal a glance at the last page, you have all you need for the next issue.  Actually, Jurgens will most definitely recap that, so I think you can skip this one.   I thought Ryan Benjamin's art was really good in this issue, but it was mostly wasted on a bunch of recap.

Bits and Pieces:

If, for some reason, you've waited for 70 issues to jump onto this book, Dan Jurgens will catch you up here with an issue full of recap.  If you are one of the few readers who remain loyal to Nightwing no matter what, Jurgens will remind you of everything you already know before getting a cool cliffhanger.  I know sales aren't great, so I will offer some crazy advice...give us Dick Grayson back!
