Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #2 pits Sgt. Rock and Easy Company against the first collection of undead Nazi soldiers. That's it. That's the description.

Is It Good?

There's something to be said for good, old-fashioned, reliable, dependable storytelling. There are no fancy narrative tricks or high-concept ideas, which tend to convolute more than elevate the plot. Simple is best because what you see is what you get, and there's no hiding behind smoke and mirrors to obscure the quality of the story.

This is a rock solid (*heh*) story from start to finish. Sgt. Rock and Easy Company have their assignment to infiltrate the Nazi base to discover what unholy experiments are happening. Infiltrate they do, but not before finding out the Nazi undead are tough to kill and have enough of their minds intact to act as formidable soldiers. If there's anything worse than a Nazi, it's a smug Nazi who knows he's immortal.

A series of action-packed, taut action scenes follow where Rock and his men try to hijack a supply truck to sneak into the base and find more than they bargained for. The pacing is high (this is a very quick read), the dialog is perfect, Campbell's sense of scene transitions and plot progression is excellent, and Rock's discovery of the presence of another historical figure instantly elevates the stakes of this mission.

Risso and Rossi's art is okay. The zombie designs are playfully gory, and the action is fast-paced and energetic, but the human designs for Rock and his soldiers lack distinctiveness. For most of the issue, it's nigh impossible to tell the soldiers apart.

Bits and Pieces:

Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #2 is a fun, energetic horror/war mashup that drops Sgt. Rock into the heat of battle with excellent pacing, plotting, and dialog. The action is fun, the deaths are gross, and the stakes take a significant bump up at the end.

8/10
