Sideways #6 Review

Let's dive right in, shall we?

Storytellers: Carmine Di Giandomenico and Dan DiDio
Art by: Carmine Di Giandomenico, Dan Brown, and Travis Lanham
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: July 11, 2018

This is the most important issue of the series by far. It's executed quite finely by the creative team, and I can't wait to see how the events of this issue affect Derek in the coming months. As impactful as the issue is for me personally, I wish it came earlier in the series just so the overall pace of the book could have been tighter. And with this, Derek is one step closer to truly becoming DC's Spider-Man.

I just can't talk much about the story without delving into what it's really all about. It's monologue-heavy and about three characters are really spotlighted. It's not a "fun" issue at all, but not in a bad way. Ernie makes a very brief appearance without any dialogue.

Kenneth Rocafort is absent for yet another issue, which is disappointing. I like Carmine Di Giandomenico but Dan Brown's colouring didn't do him any favours. It's a bit muddy and Di Giandomenico's inks don't come across as boldly as they would have under another colourist like Ivan Plascencia.

The story isn't flashy or exciting enough to warrant having this artist on board. Whenever I think of Di Giandomenico's artwork, I think of flash, bold, and kinetic characters and storytelling. This is a lot more character based and it reads a bit stiff.

Bits and Pieces:

This is a pretty good issue. It might be a turning point for the series and I wish it came sooner. The art is flawed but not bad to look at; I think this story needed Kenneth Rocafort to solidify this issue as great.

7.9/10

  1. I gotta agree with you and then some, this makes me have hope that maybe this series can turn around. It's funny but I'd actually want to see Batman or Duke Thomas actually meet up with Dereck. I wonder if Bruce gets any notifications of anybody else who dies in crime alley. All I'm saying is it would be cool. Feel bad for Dereck now his stuck with the world most none shelont father.
    8/10
