DC Comics Best Covers of the Week: October 31, 2018

These Magazine Covers Are Haunted

WooOOOooo! Not only does Halloween fall on New Comic Book Day this year, but it's a fifth week! That means it's the spookiest possible situation for this column: a dearth of regular books and a bunch of Hanna-Barbera crossovers. But I still made a list! Whether it's a trick or a treat is for you to decide.

 Doom Patrol #12
Nick Derington
Folks should know by now how much I appreciate a parody cover. And this one, taking off from Dungeons & Dragons books, is right where I like to be. Artwork from the incomparable Nick Derington elevates the shtick.

 Deathstroke/Yogi Bear #1 variant
Paolo Pantalena
Alright, that doesn't look like Yogi Bear, but the idea is still intact. And Deathstroke stalking a bear is a pretty cool image anyway. Or is Deathstroke hiding from the bear? Great coloring job on this.

Justice League Dark and Wonder Woman: The Witching Hour #1 variant
Riccardo Federici
Yeah this image is pretty messed up. The shading makes everything sort of diffuse into each other, but it's still eerie. If Diana had been colored differently, or somehow highlighted, this could be a promo posted for the Blair Witch Project.

Justice League/Aquaman: Drowned Earth #1 variant
Frank Cho
Wow, this is Frank Cho? The man has styles upon styles, I tell you. This caught my eye because of the coloring, reminiscent of the Miami Beach Deco style. The character work is nothing to sneeze at, either, but the background colors really make them pop.

Superman/Top Cat #1 variant
Emanuela Lupacchino
A picture of Superman, Amazo, and Top Cat wins the day, because of course it does. Great composition and rendering all around, but that cape of Superman's is awfully long.
