In Wonder Girl #2, Yara Flor is pulled into the water's depths by a mysterious creature as her presence in Brazil sparks alerts for magical and super-powered forces all over the world. When assassins, hunters, and heroes converge on Brazil to track Yara down, the gods intervene to awaken Yara's long-lost memories.

Was It Good?

It was very good.

Jones excels at creating a mythical epic with a mix of magic, mystery, and action. This is (almost) a gorgeous book from start to finish, and the pacing is phenomenal simply for keeping multiple threads going while interweaving all the threads in the same direction.

The art is "almost" gorgeous because there's an art style shift in all the scenes involving Cassie and Artemis that is a bit jarring in its difference compared to the main storyline. To be blunt, it's not as good. In any other comic, the Cassie/Artemis scenes would be considered very good art, but here, it's a good act following a better act, and the downgrade in art in those scenes throws you off.

What's It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD]

When last we left Yara, she was pulled into the water by some kind of sea creature. We learn through the stunning art and narration that tells of the creature's story, she's an ancient warrior named Iara who was turned into a sort of mermaid after a falling out with her family. We can't do the story justice with its beautiful integration with the art and phenomenal pacing, so best to go read it.

During Yara's encounter with her mythical namesake, Iara gives her a magical Bolabefore disappearing into the deep. Yara is returned to the surface and her tour group, but her memories are fractured and she's not sure what happened.

Across the globe, and forces that have some relationship with the gods and Amazons take action to find and stop Yara before something terrible happens. Artemis, Cassie/Wonder Girl, and South American Amazons converge on Brazil and step on each other's toes along the way.

Yara and her tour guide, João, hop on a shuttle flight to get Yara back to her hotel. While onboard, a pair of S.A. Amazons attack Yara. She fights them off with emerging super-strength she didn't know she had.

Unfortunately, one of her kicks punches a hole in the plane.

Fortunately, the gods Eros and Zephyros rescue the plane from crashing as part of their errand to fetch Yara on behalf of Hera, queen of the gods. We conclude the issue with Eros making a serious mistake in the rescue.

Bits and Pieces

Wonder Girl #2 builds sprawling, mysterious mythology to set the foundation for the world's next Wonder Girl. Despite a small slip in the art, this issue maintains the high quality started in the first issue.

9/10
