Batman / Superman: World's Finest #27 unveils the plan behind the villain-inspired imp attack on Earth. Somebody wants to find Earth's greatest hero, and it's not who you think.

Is Batman / Superman: World's Finest #27 Good?

When last we left the World's Finest and all the heroes of Earth in issue #26, an army of mites who emulate their favorite supervillains came to Earth to commit mass mayhem. The tale took a nasty turn when a run-in with Parasite and Paras-mite left the Dynamic Duo and the Man of Steel plastered to a wall as two-dimensional decals.

In Batman / Superman: World's Finest #27, Earth's greatest heroes appear to be outmatched, outgunned, and outpowered at every turn. Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite can't handle the situation on their own, so Bat-Mite desperately tries to free Batman, Robin, and Superman from their prison. Bat-Mite's efforts to free Robin work, but the diminutive Dark Knight gets sucked into the prison.

Drawn in classic Superfriends cartoon style (it looks cooler than it sounds), Bat-Mite joins Batman and Superman to tell them they're trapped in the 2nd Dimension. Bat-Mite seems unable to simply zap everyone back to Earth in the 3rd Dimension, so the imp casts a spell that transfers himself and the World's Finest to the 6th Dimension, where all Time and Space exist simultaneously.

Bat-Mite concludes the Master behind the imp attack hails from the 6th Dimension, and the World's Finest deduces that the Master is attacking Earth to find the world's greatest hero so that he can defeat the greatest to become the greatest, something that's not possible in the 6th Dimension where all things are possible at once.

If it sounds confusing, it makes sense on the page.

Back in the 3rd Dimension, Robin and Mr. Mxyzptlk conclude they can't defeat the villain mites because they're too well-matched to beat their respective heroes. Therefore, they need a new hero army. Mxyzptlk casts a spell on Jimmy Olsen that unleashes all past versions of himself that were ever transformed into some kind of superpowered being.

Thus, the Olsen Squad is born and launches an attack. The gambit worked, and the villain imps were defeated, leaving Jimmy Olsen as Earth's Greatest Hero. Suddenly, the Master arrives for Round 2... against Jimmy Olsen.

What's great about Batman / Superman: World's Finest #27/ Mark Waid runs the gauntlet from powerful superhero action to amusing throwbacks to characters and situations not seen in decades to an imaginative plot to the clearest explanation of alternate plots I've read in some time. If you want a fun, exciting, cool, action/adventure story, this is as good as it gets.

What's not so great about Batman / Superman: World's Finest #27? At the risk of being super picky, there's a blip in the action early in the issue that doesn't explain how Cheetah and Parasite get knocked out. Yes, it's a minor point, but it forces you to pause and backtrack to figure out what you missed.

How's the Art? Untouchable. Dan Mora continues to impress and hold his spot as one of the best artists at DC Comics or anywhere. Mora's eye for whimsical details, powerful figures, and wow moments hit all the right, best notes for a superhero comic.
