God Willing

Welcome back to GODHEAD with Act 3 Part 3.  Here we'll take a look at how Kyle Rayner and Carol Ferris are faring at ground level of Old Genesis.  But first let's see how we got to this point.  I'm sure if you're reading GODHEAD you know that Kyle was tricked by Highfather into giving up the Life Equation and after the task was complete he let his true intentions of turning everyone into soldier slaves slip and after Carol spent her remaining power trying to fight off the New God, they were simply boom tubed to the surface of the planet.  In the last Part, we saw Malhedron switch sides and save John Stewart, Sinestro and Saint Walker from said soldier slaving and after a little payback to Uggha, John Stewart and Saint Walker were left trying to come up with a rescue plan for the rest of the captured Lanterns.  So let's see where the story takes us this week as we check out the newest installment of GODHEAD.

Explain It!:

Now I love the idea of Kyle and Carol being together and I don't know if it's because of how much I like Kyle or that I just love seeing Hal Jordan fans get pissed off about it, but our issue begins with Kyle having some 'splaining to do.  Remember a couple issues ago when Kyle lost his shit with the Life Equation and he kind of turned Carol into his old girlfriend Alex?  Well Carol even with all the shit that's happened since then still remembers and she's doing her damnedest to try and not completely lose it on Kyle for him doing that to her.  I mean I understand that he wasn't in control of his powers but when you accidentally turn your current girlfriend into your old......... or hell, even if you accidentally call them by the other name, well I'm sorry Kyle but you really don't have a leg to stand on here.

Luckily Metron shows up and breaks up the tension.  Now while Metron is still working for Highfather, he's really more concerned about keeping the balance and he's afraid that Highfather might just be stepping over the line a bit with his Life Equation and his soldier slaves that he's creating.  So to give balance a better shot, he leaves Carol and Kyle with an old motherbox that will be able to boom tube them once before running out of power and it seems that Kyle and Carol have better luck than Guy and Simon did when they boom tubed to New Genesis because they actually ended up in a decent area.  It's kind of a reunion when Kyle and Carol boom tube right in front of John Stewart and Saint Walker, but the good feels won't last too long.

Since Highfather didn't kill him, then Metron didn't want to kill him, Kyle figures that he's on the "Do Not Kill" list and when New Genesis soldiers show up to apprehend our heroes, Kyle's plan is to just go right up to them and fight.  Now as crazy as that sounds since we've seen the New Gods kicking the Lanterns asses up and down with fully charged rings.......... This actually works and we find out that no one is supposed to kill what they call "The Bearer" and our heroes for one of the first times actually gets the upper hand and they subdue the guards and take their energy staffs as weapons.  Since the motherbox that Metron gave Carol and Kyle was only good for one trip, our heroes will have to find Highfather on their own and hopefully get Kyle's ring back and stop Highfather's machinations.  That sound like it might take awhile but surprisingly it only took as long as the Guardians to tell the other Lantern captives inside the Singularity Stockade that they're leaving the prison for us to go back and find that our heroes are already battling Highfather.  Now I know we don't have to see every little thing, but damn was that a big jump in between trying to find Highfather to out right battling him.

In the end, our heroes catch Highfather off guard and using their newly acquired energy staffs, Kyle is able to break Highfather's scepter, releasing his ring but when he puts the white ring back on.......... nothing happens.  Yeah, it seems that the white ring and the scepter are just a focusing tool and that Highfather doesn't need it to wield the Life Equation because the Life Equation is actually inside of him now.  We leave this issue witnessing the wrath of a god as Highfather turns his powers on our heroes and while I know that them being gone is highly improbable, especially since it happened off panel, I couldn't help but feel a shiver as I read it.  Even with my shivers though, I'm wondering about the big change in heart about offing "The Bearer".  Hopefully that question will be answered next week.

That's it for this issue of Green Lantern: New Guardians and GODHEAD Act 3 Part 3 and man is shit going from bad to worse........... the events, not the story.  By no means is this story bad at all, we're given action, drama, comedy, tragedy......... This freaking issue has it all.  If it wasn't for some strange time jumps between scenes that I found jarring, this could be one of the best issues of GODHEAD so far.  So with great art from Diogenes Neves and Rodney Buchemi this issue of New Guardians is the complete package.

Bits and Pieces:

I freaking love this issue!  We've got Kyle having to face up for how he used the Life Equation in a previous issue that I knew was going to come back to haunt him and we've got our Lantern heroes showing that they are more than just a ring when push comes to shove combined with excellent art, this issue is one of the best that GODHEAD has to offer.  You should totally check it out and continue your adventure of Lanterns Vs. New Gods.

9.3/10
