Terminal is dead and the Joker is back in town....... That's essentially all we got from the previous arc and while I enjoyed it for the most part, it really just forced its way to an ending in the last issue.  Now it's time to get on with our Batman Beyond life and see what Terry McGinnis has left in the tank now that he's back to being Batman full time and now has Bruce Wayne back in his life.  Hopefully, as things continue we'll see what's up with Terry's new Batman suit and see if his little brother Matt starts training to be his new Robin.  Yeah, I don't know why Terry would want to put Matt in danger like that, but I just love the idea and hope that it's brought to page in this series because he's been a big help to his big brother so far, not to mention how much he helped when Tim Drake was rocking the bat suit.  Let's jump into this issue and see what the next arc holds and what Curare is doing back in town.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with Curare being chased throughout Neo Gotham by the League of Assassins and....... Well, that's about all we get at the beginning.  Curare gets away and we can move on to Batman stuff because we won't find out this issue why the League is after Curare at all.  So yeah, back in the Bat Cave, we see Bruce back in his iconic Beyond old man suit, taking a stroll through the cave and seeing what the kid screwed up while he was away and while Bruce comes off a little nicer than you'd image the curmudgeony character to be........... there are instances where that disappears and he throws some verbal jabs Terry's way.  All in all, Bruce is back in the cave and while Terry can't wait to sit down and catch up with his mentor, he has to first take Dana home and try to see if he can salvage anything of their previous relationship now that he's found out that he's Batman.  It's during this time that Matt mentions to Bruce about how great it is that he's back because they didn't know what to do when Terry shredded his Batman suit and got lucky to find the prototype one he's currently wearing and I kind of expected a little more out of Bruce at this point because when Matt brings up the file on the suit, Bruce very casually says that that suit may kill its wearer.  No, "Get Terry on the comm, we have to warn him", no, "Don't worry Matt, I'm sure Terry won't die", just "Yeah, that suits bad news........ just a straight up death machine".  Such a weird scene.

In the end, Curare shows up at the GCPD because she needs Barbara Gordon's help to contact Batman and when the two get up on the roof to light the signal, they're attacked by the League of Assassins and even though Barbara fought ridiculously hard to try and get the signal working so that he might get some backup, Terry had just got done telling Dana about how he had to start putting himself first and Batman second so when he sees the signal in the sky, he kind of waves it away and dismisses it as not being important.

That's it for this issue of Batman Beyond and while we did get some really cool scenes talking about what Terry intends to do now that he's got Dana back in his life and some equally cool scenes of Bruce just being back in the Bat Cave, this issue didn't really do much at all besides make you smack your damn forehead at the end at the stupidity of Terry McGinnis taking his superhero job lightly so that he can get back into Dana's pants.  Yeah, there might have been a more romantic side to it, but to me it's just pants entering.  We get a bunch of Curare, which is cool, but this issue gave us nothing in telling us why she's there, just fight scene after fight scene and at the end of the day, the biggest draw to this issue is the genuine good feels you get from Terry's interactions with Bruce and the incredible art in this book.  Besides that though, there isn't much going on here at all besides for taking the time to acclimate new readers into what's been going on in the world of Batman Beyond.

Bits and Pieces:
Man, is this a great jumping on point for new readers because besides for bringing everyone up to speed with what's been going on in this series, there really isn't much going on here besides for fight scenes that we don't get a background on and our hero making us think that he's a giant dope at the end.  The art in this issue looked great though and there were some genuinely "nice" moments on an emotional level, but besides for that........... not much else.

6.4/10

  1. Was liking this issue until the end. Maybe we'll get rid of the Micronauts suit, and Bruce and Curare are back. But that ending... if Terry is so willing to ignore the signal just to get some of that sweet poontang pie, maybe he doesn't need to be Batman. Disappointing ending brings it down for me. I'll go 6.3 so I can get to the Showcase Showdown instead of Eric. Or at least have a chance to play Plinko.
