After a month of tearing our hair out in anticipation, we're finally going to find out what happened when Superboy (Jonathan Kent) came face to face with the Crime Syndicate of Earth-3........ and with that we're going to learn how any of that makes sense since we know that Earth-3 is destroyed and that every member of the Crime Syndicate is dead after Forever Evil and the Darkseid War...... Right?  This can't just be thrown out there with no continuity right?  Let's jump into this issue and find out.

Let me just start out by saying.... I love the Crime Syndicate.  I was genuinely excited for the prospect of them showing up here and Brian Michael Bendis having a creative way of bringing them back from the dead or retroactively making it so that they never died in the first place or something along those lines......... What I got instead though was the Crime Syndicate and Earth-3 just showing up and nothing being explained about it.  Hell, we only really get Ultraman here and Brian Michael Bendis does nothing exciting with him at all and just turns him into a crybaby for no reason.

I thought there would be some time travel explanation to explain these characters being here that would also explain Jon's aging in a clever way, but really........ nothing happens in this issue except for some strange ass dialog and Jon continuing his story about where he's been and I can only hope that I will have to eat my words about this going forward because it seems that we'll continue on with Earth-3 in the next issue, where we'll hopefully see more of the Crime Syndicate and Brian Michael Bendis can take that opportunity to make any of this make sense and really, as excited as I am to see more of the Crime Syndicate......... if nothing is explained then none of this really matters.  It just is....... and continuity won't matter anymore to what feels like the majority of writers at DC Comics.

All in all, the only real bit of enjoyment I got out of this issue except for the initial "Wow, it's the Crime Syndicate" was in the first couple of pages that tied into General Zod earlier in this series and even that felt odd because we then immediately went into Superman explaining his sleep cycle to his family for some reason.  The dialog feels odd, these characters don't make sense and Jon just talked about sitting in a volcano for the majority of the issue.  I want to like this series, but I need things to start adding up because what's the point of serialized fiction if nothing matters from issue to issue?  The art is amazing the whole way through, I just wish I enjoyed what it was depicting.

Bits and Pieces:

The Crime Syndicate is back!........... and that's as far as we get of an explanation to how that's possible.  The art is amazing here, but someone really needs to inform Brian Michael Bendis on what's been going on in the DC Universe over the past couple of years.  Even with my continuity concerns put to the side for a second, there really wasn't much to this issue at all.

5/10

  1. I completely agree...I had so much hype for this issue, reading it first. The dialogue was just bizarre, and the story moved at a glacial pace. Very disappointed .

  2. The group attacking in the dream sequence is pretty obviously the Legion. You can see Bouncing Boy, Gates, Bloc, and Lighting Lad probably.

  3. I 1000% agree and thank god someone is saying it... .where is editorial!!!?????? Bendis just used a group of villians whose world had been destoryed, half are dead, super woman was imprisoned pregnant, owlman was last seen talking to Lex Luthor in shady manners... what is the point of being a loyal DC reader if they aren't going to pay attention to their own continuity!!! Justice League Dark has been doing a TON of stuff that you KNOW will not be referenced in other books... they destoryed Nanda Parbat, destroyed the parliamnet of trees and just killed Entrigan the demon... also in the batman who laughs he blew up Wayne tower... guarentee no one ever mentions these things and Wayne tower is shown to be just fine in other books

    1. I think DC has given up on tied continuity now, each book has its on it's own (not counting cross-overs) and I think they said that story takes preference over that silly history stuff.

    2. They said that during dcyou...even so, there should be an explanation of some sort and where is the good story???? If you are giving up continuity give us more than cry baby ultraman!!!!

    3. I suppose this Syndicate is another multiversion of them and not the ones we saw in Forever Evil but we still have Owlman running around somewhere... but I think Bendis doesn't care about what went before or if his stories are good, they just are.

    4. I must have missed that. Fuck continuity then, it's too hard to keep up!
