Two Halves Make a Whole

Last issue really broke the camel’s back for me. I spent so much time on this book, trying to defend it. However, last issue I couldn’t take it any longer. This book is going to end next month and frankly, this is good news. Ever since the No Justice storyline that brought in a new team, this book has suffered. The book has been dragged into every crossover that DC could throw it in. Most of the roster has been used in other storylines that have dragged this book down and frankly, the new team doesn’t mesh well together. The story is fairly predictable and this whole thing has become one of the worst books in the lineup. The book needs to end but until then, let’s jump into this issue and see where it takes us.

We pick up our story with Lord Travesty after he has killed Ernest. Mother Blood commends him for his actions and then he tells her where she can keep up with what’s happening in the battle. She walks into the room and sees Beast Boy tearing through the Titans. Donna is doing her best to fight him and the evil Raven but the team is low in numbers and injured. They are at a significant disadvantage and they soon give the upper hand to their enemies. Donna trades blows with Beast Boy while Raven tries to fend off her evil self.

Back in the castle, Travesty frees the good side of Raven’s soul self from her bindings, revealing that he was helping them all along. Just at this moment, Ernest rises up and finds himself uninjured. Ernest then uses his magic to free Steel and Kyle Rayner. After being freed, they talk with Raven’s soul self to convince her to rejoin with her other side that was separated by Mother Blood. After she leaves, Kyle and Steel decide that they need to send a message to the league and so, Kyle uses his ring to carve into Steel’s hammer. Back on the battlefield, Raven’s evil side is about to deal a final blow to Raven and Ms. Martian. Just before this happens though, the other part of Raven’s soul self arrives and the two become one once again.

They rejoin with the original Raven again and with her new powers, she is able to stop Beast Boy and return him to his previous self. Seeing this through the mirror, Mother Blood realizes that she has been betrayed. Kyle and Steel are able to send the message back to Ben in the real world. After doing so, they are confronted by Mother Blood and they launch into battle. Back at the mirror with Mother Blood’s henchmen, the mirror cracks and eventually breaks creating a portal for the rest of the team to enter the castle and join the fight. This is where the issue leaves us.

The book is coming to an end and it’s very obvious. For all the overly complicated monologues of the previous issue, this issue is rather straight forward. There is a long fight scene between Evil Raven, Beast Boy and the other Titans. There is a deception by Travesty who then joins our heroes. And Raven becomes whole once again. It’s a rather simple story. Things happen as you would expect them to happen. It doesn’t fix any of the issues that I already had with this book. It just gets us to the end sooner. So, in that aspect, I guess this book is better than the last one.

Bits and Pieces

We are speeding toward the end of this series and it cannot come soon enough. At least this issue is significantly less frustrating than the previous one. This issue doesn’t really fix any of the issues that this book has faced but at least we are getting our characters back to the status quo.
