Review by Joey Casco of TheWineStalker.net

A plane full of rich and powerful CEO's and businessmen was hijacked by Deadshot, who was hired to kidnap them, only to be hit by lightning and crash onto a tropical island inhabited by animals and two castaway pilots from World War II. Bruce Wayne was on that plane but was tossed out and landed away from the rest, only to be found by those pilots Hiroshi and Clarence, and now he needs their help to take down Deadshot and save the other survivors.

So I liked the last issue even if it wasn't all that great because it was fun, but this... ugh. I've got to keep this review short because I've got a ton of writing to do for an article coming out this weekend on my own blog, so I'm glad this is an issue that I don't want to spend much time on.

We go back a half an hour to see how Bruce set up his attack on Deadshot. He's pulling Hiroshi's plane out of the mud, and then the dude goes into the mud to cover himself all Arnold-in-Predator style. This is to hide his identity, even though Deadshot knows Bruce Wayne is loose on the island, and he's going to be going at him with bat ears sewn onto a pilot helmet and everything. Both Bruce and Deadshot are idiots, apparently.

And here's another thing: the monkey getting shot in the last issue happened right there as Bruce is coming out of the mud. Deadshot and the hostages are close, he can see the monkey and shoots him, but doesn't see Bruce and the pilots or hear all the commotion they're making? Also, Bruce isn't even dressed yet. In the last issue, Deadshot immediately gets up to get the monkey and Batman is there waiting for him.

And then! OH THEN! We skip ahead to after the last issue, and the plane comes swinging down on ropes from the trees to hit Deadshot before he can shoot Bruce. When did they do this? How do you get a plane into a tree and set it up to swing down like that in, like, less than a few minutes? Whatever.

SPOILERS: Anyways, Hiroshi gets shot by Deadshot but he survives in the end. Batman takes out Deadshot in hand to hand combat, and Deadshot never even makes the connection that it's either Batman or Bruce Wayne. Everybody gets rescued because Alfred has a tracker on Bruce, but Hiroshi and Clarence decide the stay. And there's more Freeze stuff at the end.

The one thing I did like about this issue was that Bruce gave Hiroshi and Clarence comm links so they could continue communicating and call for help if they need it, and it even shows him dropping off supplies and books for them.

Bits and Pieces:

Mostly this issue made me angry. The art is awesome, and that's pretty much my entire score.

4/10

  1. Thanks for the great, honest review! To me, this whole little arc feels like filler. I HAD been enjoying Detective as a bit of a refuge from the egotistic nonsense Tom King has been force-feeding Batman fans in the main title. Hopefully things won't continue in this sort of direction.

    1. I don't see the problem with fillers because they serve a purpose. Like I said, I really enjoyed this story because it wasn't important and just a fun romp... until this issue. It all fell apart. Also... Hiroshi knows how to SPEAK English but now needs to learn to READ English because of all of these books. Damn it, Bruce.
