Suicide Squad #5 Review

The Destruction of the (Not So) Innocent

Writer: Tom Taylor
Artist: Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: May 27, 2020

I have enjoyed Tom Taylor's short time on this book so far and can't figure out why it's not selling more.  While I think the shutdown might kill other books momentums, I hope it might kickstart this one a bit.  I'm not sure how or why that would happen, but a guy can have his hopes and dreams, right?  Well, maybe a kickass issue will do the trick.  Is this that issue?  Let's find out...

If you remember, the last issue's cliffhanger did not look good for Jog.  I mean, his name is "Jog," but he ran straight into Captain Boomerang's trap.  As for the rest of the team, well, they are pissed, and while Deadshot tries to stick to the plan, Osita wants to stick Digger in a coffin.  I am starting to love this team, and while most of them have an X-feeling to them, the she-hulking of Osita is my favorite.

Back at Belle Reve, Tom Taylor works his magic with a tension-filled scene that ends perfectly... and turns into a riot!  Okay, I said it ended perfectly, but technically it continues, and if you are playing at home, you know somebody is probably going to die.  It's a Tom Taylor issue, for crying out loud.  I'm not going to spoil it, but remember that he is sneaky and waits until your guard is down to lower the boom.

The issue then ends with a huge twist and reveal that I think we need to see more of, but I believe it will drive old Eric Shea insane.  It's not a far trip, by the way, and I love seeing him lose his shit.  If you listen to the podcast, I'll give you a little hint... a character Eric loves might be the Big Bad behind everything in this book!

This is a quick-moving issue filled with twists and turns and a huge reveal.  Add Bruno Redondo's art to that, and you got yourself a mighty good tasting goulash.  Seriously though, buy this book.  It's better than a lot of what's on the shelf nowadays and deserves more love.

Bits and Pieces:

Tom Taylor blows up heads and hearts in an issue with more twists than Chubby Checker, and believe me, Chubby went back to that well quite a few times!  Taylor's Suicide Squad has a Summer Blockbuster vibe, and if you are looking for a fun, action-packed book with great art, look no further.  Highly Recommended.

    1. Great review. Great tissue overall. The reveal of the supposed big bad was kind of mind-blowing from me as well I don't know how this is going to work. It's very weird especially given the teriffics today. Maybe he's in Deep Cover. Anyway I like this direction of of the team going on suicide missions but it being on their own. It's well written bt I still don't like the fact that Tom Taylor tries to trick you into feeling something and then pulls the rug from under you. He's good at it though it's still annoying
