I was into this Wonder Woman in Asgard story at first, but I have been looking for the exit since. Thankfully, we get to the light at the end of the tunnel here, but was it worth the wait? As always, it depends on what you think, but since you're here to see what is going through my little brain, let's get to it!
After so many people warned her against talking to the Valkyries, Wonder Woman finally does the meet and greet, and we find out they are pretty pissed off. However, they aren't mad at Diana, but at Thor, who happens to show up as well.
The problem with that is it becomes less of a Wonder Woman story, and more of a "Thor is a sexist ass" story. Now, Diana does jump in and figures out that Thor is misbehaving because of Doctor Psycho's (or Cizko's) cursed weapons. That is just old news here, and it felt like a forced way to continue the story by now.
It does speed things up, but why did everyone warn Diana about seeing the Valkyries in the first place. They don't seem to have a problem with her at all.
After a brief interlude, so Diana can punch Psycho in the face and talk a bit to Deadman, we get a meeting of the minds to figure out the Valkyrie problem. It's all solved by giving the Valkyries a day of rest (called the cringe-worthy "Thirsty Thorsday"), and that's that.
Now, you may be asking, "What about Yggdrasil?" Well, that's all solved with the Valkyries going back to work since the lack of new bloodshed was making it hungry and malnourished. While Conrad and Cloonan kill two birds with one stone here, they also kill any epicness their story might have had.
The story ends with Diana spending some sexy time with Siggy and leaving Asgard behind. We do see that Deadman was right about Olympus being in hot water, but for some reason, Wonder Woman looks surprised at that turn of events.
This book continues to look great, and while I was excited to see Wonder Woman deal with a different Pantheon, this story ended with a thud. Everything wrapped itself up in a way that barely needed Wonder Woman around. Plus, almost all of the major points of the story just happened because they needed to happen without any natural flow or progression.
Bits and Pieces:
Wonder Woman solves the Asgard problem, but does she? Diana gets her memories back, but I wish it weren't such a forgettable story by the end. It's now off to Olympus to hopefully get something a little more inspired.

I feel like Wonder Woman has been getting the shaft when it comes to writers for a bit now. Wonder Woman and Flash get the no name or less experienced writers.
ReplyDeleteShe's had some big names but it really feels like nobody knows what to do with the character in the long run. Yeah, someone might have a story but it never lasts and most of the time it barely feels like the character. I was hoping with this new run that putting her in a "fish out of water" scenario with Valhalla would be fun and interesting but that pretty quickly found itself into silly territory and while Wonder Woman should be ascended she's never felt more human to me.
