Arkham City: The Order of the World #5 brings the looney tunes together as the true identity of Amadeus Arkham is revealed, and the puppet-master behind everything summons Dr. Joy and her band of inmates to the "new" Arkham Asylum.

Was It Good?

Arkham City: The Order of the World #5 is the penultimate issue in this series, and it does one thing reasonably well - it answers lingering questions. Whether or not the answers justify the existence of this mini in the first place is up to you.

When last we left the Ten-Eyed Man and his crazy colleagues, they were all captured and restrained in Gotham General until their disposition could be sorted out. Meanwhile, Dr. Joy was playing house guest to Nocturna, and Dr. Phosphorous as the irradiated bodies of their neighbors littered the floor of their apartment. It's all a bunch of crazy on top of crazy, so on that count, Watters succeeds.

Again, the issue's highlight is the reveal of who and why. Who is masquerading as Amadeus Arkham, and why are they doing it? The "who" is answered early in the issue (truthfully, it was given away in the last issue if you were paying attention), and it makes sense in the context of the story.

The "why" is sort of answered but not completely. Without spoiling too much, the person masquerading as Arkham's ghost is only following orders, and the person giving orders will make you dread how this story will end. That said, the story's complexity up to this point doesn't quite fit within that character's M.O.. Technically, it works, but the full reveal is a "that's it?" moment. Watters has the opportunity to make the reveal pay off in the final issue next month, so it's a wait-and-see for now.

Dani's art is Dani's art. It's an acquired taste, but to be fair, the blotchy inks didn't look as sloppy in this issue as they did in the previous one. You can notice a mild improvement in the art clarity, so that's a plus.

Bits and Pieces

Arkham City: The Order of the World #5 is a reveal-filled penultimate issue in this limited series. The mysterious players are brought to the light, even if their motives are unclear. The art is less sloppy than the previous issue, and there are some genuine moments of tension within. That said, the reveals instill dread but lack punch, so it's a wait-and-see recommendation.

7.5/10
