First Impressions
Stepping into this comic felt like being dropped into a whirlpool of timelines and alternate realities. The immediate sensation was one of thrilling, albeit disorienting, action as the plot quickly escalated. The vibrant visuals instantly grabbed attention, hinting at an epic journey.
Recap
In Superman #28, Superman found himself mysteriously transported by Time Trapper to a pocket timeline, an alternate reality. This world was under siege by Darkseid, who had corrupted the Legion of Super-Heroes into his heralds. Superman was left to face this transformed Legion alone, setting the stage for a desperate fight for survival.
Plot Analysis
The comic opens with an younger, disillusioned Clark Kent recounting his past. He talks about losing everything during a crisis, becoming Superman's archenemy as Superboy-Prime, and eventually receiving a redemption arc. This sets up his perspective on the current predicament.
Time Trapper, who brought Superman to this pocket timeline, reveals his intentions to Superman and Superboy-Prime. He explains that Superboy-Prime is an anomaly Darkseid's Legion is not prepared for. Time Trapper also states he is needed elsewhere and cannot accompany them to the 31st Century.
Superboy-Prime then decides to punch through time and space. He believes the time stream is being watched, so they need a different route to the 31st century. He assures Superman this pocket universe is not real and the journey will be easy.
Upon arriving in what appears to be a desolate, war-torn future, Superman and Superboy-Prime find the Legion of Super-Heroes defeated. Superboy-Prime reveals that they lost the "War of Legions" and their only hope is to save Booster Gold, a hero Superman has no memory of after the events of the All-In Special #1.
Detailed Review
Writing
Joshua Williamson's narrative structure leans heavily on Superboy-Prime's meta commentary, breaking the fourth wall frequently. This approach delivers exposition and sets reader expectations for future events. The dialogue attempts to be witty, particularly from Superboy-Prime, who often recounts comic book tropes and his own history with a cynical edge. However, this sometimes detracts from the immediate tension of the situation. The plot progression is swift, moving from one dramatic event to the next without much pause.
Art
Dan Mora’s artwork is the undeniable highlight of this issue. The characters are rendered with a dynamic energy that makes every punch and flight sequence pop off the page. Alejandro Sánchez's colors enhance this vibrancy, with striking contrasts and atmospheric lighting, especially in the desolate future landscapes. The panel layouts are fluid and guide the eye effectively through the action. The detailed backgrounds, whether in the initial flashback or the ravaged 31st century, provide a strong sense of place and mood.
Characters
Superman is portrayed as a hero grappling with grave circumstances, seeking to protect the future. He is visibly concerned by the destruction around him and the casual demeanor of Superboy-Prime. Superboy-Prime acts as a jaded guide, possessing foreknowledge of events and a nonchalant attitude towards the unfolding chaos. Time Trapper is presented as an enigmatic figure with a larger, unseen agenda, serving as a catalyst for the main plot.
Positives
The art is simply phenomenal, boasting clean lines, dynamic character poses, and lush coloring that brings every panel to life. The visual storytelling perfectly conveys the dire circumstances and the scale of the conflict, making the bleak future genuinely impactful. The detailed environments and expressive characters ensure the art carries much of the narrative weight, making it a standout aspect of the comic.
Negatives
The constant breaking of the fourth wall by Superboy-Prime, while aiming for wit, frequently undermines the story's stakes. His predictions of upcoming events strip away any sense of suspense, making the unfolding tragedy feel less immediate and more like a foregone conclusion. This narrative choice, intended to be sharp, ultimately dilutes the emotional impact of significant plot points and character fates.

Final Thoughts
Superman #29 delivers a visually stunning journey through a grim future, but the script often gets in its own way. While the art truly shines, Superboy-Prime's meta commentary, though occasionally clever, drains much of the emotional resonance from what should be a desperate fight. It is a competent continuation of the "Legion of Darkseid" saga, yet it could have been more impactful without constantly winking at the reader.
