“Beyond Burnside” Chapter One: The Batgirl you know and love is going global with Eisner Award-winning and New York Times best-selling writer Hope Larson (A Wrinkle in Time, Goldie Vance) and all-star artist Rafael Albuquerque (AMERICAN VAMPIRE). In order to up her game, Babs travels to Japan on a quest to train with the most elite modern combat masters of the East. But when a chance meeting with an old friend puts a target on her back, Batgirl may need to use her new skills to solve a deadly mystery.
I know that our little site got tagged at a point for being Batgirl haters, but that is so far from the truth. Sure, Eric may not have liked the whole Burnside direction it took, but even he admitted that he warmed up to it over time. Of course, it took me yanking the book from him to get him to that moment of clarity, but c'est la vie! Things are a changing, though, as Hope Larson is taking Babs in a Kung Fu type direction and I think it sounds cool as hell. by the way, if you haven't read Larson's "Goldie Vance" book yet, do yourself a favor and get on it asap. What? I'm not supposed to push other publisher's books in things like this? Who says? Everybody?!?! I guess you're right then, little voice in my head. I won't do it again. Psst...read both Batgirl and Goldie Vance. Just don't tell anybody I said too.
PS: Rafael Albuquerque's art kicks total ass!!!
