I mentioned in my review and podcast that I am getting a little tired of this book and it's a shame.  I love the Super Sons, but I need some story to go along with the charming leads.  I really don't need much, just a little more.  Is this the issue where I get my wish?  Let's find out...

The issue opens with Damian, Jon and their "Super Dads" hanging out and testing Jon's flying ability.  I have to say that from the beginning, this issue felt a bit off with what we have been getting and seemed more like a continuation of the Super Sons prelude issues we got a while back in Superman.  It's not bad, however, but the best parts actually come from the Clark/Bruce interactions than from the book's leads.

That continues as Jon is allowed to fly off and fight crime solo as Damian learns that his super partner can't keep a secret.  When Jon returns, Damian confronts the blabbermouth, but it turns into a buddy moment when Jon shows Damian what it's like to fly.  A buddy moment that felt off with Damian involved.

We then get the first big moment as we see the future and Batman 666.  If you know what that is, then you know why I am fired up!  It's all just setup for now and we continue with some more setup that has me almost as fired up...the Super Sons getting a base and also heading to school!

Yep, Batman and Superman have built an underwater base for their sons and will let them continue their extracurricular activities if they do well in school.  That's nothing new with Jon, but Damian?!?!  He is not so happy about it and the idea that he might even be in Jon's class is just ridiculous to him!  I couldn't help but love Jon's reaction to it all, but thinking about Damian in school is so great.  We almost got it in Gotham Academy, but maybe this will stick.  The issue ends with Batman and Superman leaving and the Super Sons heading off to Metropolis to fight a classic foe.

Batman 666 and the Super Sons in school together?  I'm in!  That being said, the good times I'm hoping for are in the future and this book had some issues.  I already said a couple of times that the story placement felt odd, but it also had pacing problems and Damian's characterization took a couple of steps backwards.  Still, I really enjoyed the art and there were some fun moments throughout.

Bits and Pieces:

In a book with not a lot going on, a full out setup issue was an odd choice, but I do like what looks to be coming in the near (and farther) future.  This issue had good art, but it also had pacing issues and not much forward momentum...yet.  I am all for what's coming, but still a little disappointed in the here and now.

6.8/10

  1. I want to like this series but it seems all over the place. This issue was 'ok' with me, which I guess means I agree w/a 6.
