Parting is Such Sweet...Well It's Something

Before anyone gets upset, I know there is one more issue of Stormwatch.  However, issue #30 is a prelude to "Futures End" and features the original team so I still consider this issue the end of the run.  I am looking forward to see what Jim Starlin has in store next month even though I am still irritated by this issue.  Way to go DC, get the book involved in a big event the month it's canceled! Now on with the review...

It's a funny thing.  You think you can't stand something until it's taken away from you.  As Cinderella's Tom Keifer sang, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone."  Well Tom, you gravely voiced metal god, this ain't one of those times.  Stormwatch was a bad book that Jim Starlin tried his best to save, but he's a writer, not a miracle worker.  This issue is a goodbye for now and also a good riddance.

Yep, the gang is all here.  Actually, Lobo isn't.  He is mentioned, but we all know that he never should have been in the book in the first place.  I'm no insider, but if I could talk off the record with Starlin I'm sure he'd say the same.  The rest of the gang is here, though, and they get to say their goodbyes.  Apollo and Midnighter (who are probably the only characters we will see again) get to kiss and decide to hang out for a while, Hellstrike gets a bit of redemption, Angie and A.I. are separated and thank each other.  Then, Storm Control and the Shadow Lords talk about cloning, the meaning of life and trust.  Hmmmm...

What about Jenny and Extremax?  Well, the whole Kollective and the artifact story is resolved by Extremax not being able to use the artifact and Jenny sending the three pieces back into the cosmos because it's just too dangerous for anyone to posess.  Then Extremax tells Jenny maybe they will meet again and leaves. Really?  Look, I realize the book got cancelled before Starlin could tell the whole story, but that's the best he could do?  Jenny and the Weird end the book by going to grab a bite to eat.

This book has not been good and has gone through a reboot and creative team change.  For those who stuck with it, this issue is more of an insult than an ending.  Jim Starlin is a good writer, but I think he was glad it ended (or pissed, I'm not sure) and mailed this one in.  For what it's worth, Yvel Guichet's art was pretty good.

Bits and Pieces:

Stormwatch #29 ends a series nobody seemed to care about.  For the few fans out there, just get the issue even though I'm sure you'll be just as ticked off as me. The creative team thanks the readers who stuck with the series at the end of the book, but everything before it is a slap in the face.

1.5/10
