The Future Is Now

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Welcome back to the future where our heroes after beating the "god" Brainiac have a new threat on their hands as the future we all saw in issue #0 is coming to pass as Brother Eye has been activated and used all the dead bodies littered throughout Territech as it's own Borg-ed out soldiers.  Not only that though, we have a whole lot of side stories that need to be tied up before this series can end, so let's see if they are as interesting as Brother Eye taking over the world........... Yeah, I doubt it but loose ends sink ships.................. or something like that.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our foray into the future begins by tying up the Fifty Sue, Lana, Grifter story line...... Well, what I believe is the end to the story line, by having Lana appear over Sgt. Rock while he sleeps and finally letting us in on what she is capable of since it was revealed that she was a meta-human a while back.  This whole section is pretty much Lana coming off scary as hell as she threatens Rock to stop searching for her and her new adopted family.  As it turns out............ Lana is freaking gross as hell.  She has the ability to take on characteristics of different bugs she calls on........... kind of like an insect Avatar and she makes her demands clear by calling forth the parasitoid wasp that injects spiders with it's eggs and.............. Well, I guess you can imagine the rest........ I hate bugs and my life long crush on Lana Lang has just been ruined.  Fifty Sue and her teleport back to Grifter and his sidekick Justin and they all have a family meal at a diner where we find out that Fifty Sue has shrunk the DNA vault down to pocket size and I guess all's well that ends well............. I still don't like the idea of Fifty Sue being allowed to live but I guess we'll go with it.

Back in Manhattan, the Justice League get a call to assemble at the Terrifitech building and inside we see our heroes and villains fighting for their lives as the dead have come back all Brother Eyed out and this comic becomes a zombie story.  Well, it's not all zombie bashing, we do have The Atom and Mister Terrific looking into recharging Batman Beyond's time travel device but besides for that it's all about survival.  Key gets pulled away by the horde of the dead and it seems that Coil has himself a conscious after all and decides to go after his friend........ It's kind of cool because with Coil's magnetic powers he could actually turn the tables here because all these Brother Eye monsters are full of metal.

In the end, the Batman/Joker monster makes another appearance and we have the best part of the book.  It looks like Batman Beyond is finished and when he tells Bruce that he's sorry for failing, the Batman/Joker monster's head turns and Batman takes control telling him that failure is not an option and Terry pulls the monster off the ledge, hopefully finally killing it with the fall and as our issue closes it seems that Terry has sustained more injuries than I initially thought when he has a emotional moment with Tim Drake and seemingly dies in Plastique's arms.  Man, is that a good ending to a comic but it's depressing as hell.

That's it for this issue of Futures End and while I loved the last bit of the story the majority of the issue was just (what I believe to be) the finale to Fifty Sue's story that came off very anticlimactic even with the disturbing Lana moment and then letting us know that Brother Eye monsters are attacking our heroes.  Until the end I was really not enjoying the book but man did it come around.  The art was solid throughout though and everything looked great.  If we could just get these side stories wrapped up we might just something epic on our hands as we finish out this series.

Bits and Pieces:

The art throughout this book was great and if it had a little bit more to actually say, this issue would have been amazing.  Well, it's still kind of amazing I just wish it didn't take until the last few pages to actually come around.  While some might be interested in the side stories that have been throughout this series, at this point I just want them to be over so we can see what we came here to see; some heroes saving the future.  For all my gripes this was a decent issue and it makes me hyped to see what comes next.

7.5/10

  2. Earlier versions of Lana had insect powers too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insect_Queen_%28DC_Comics%29

I've lost track... Is that vault connected to the thing Green Arrow gave to Huntress over in World's End?

    1. No, the DNA vault was full of meta human DNA that Faraday used to create Fifty Sue.......... Maybe there is something connected with that but it hasn't been revealed if that's the case.

    2. Yeah, I went and looked and she has had a long history of insect tendencies that I have not been privy to....... or wanted to be privy too. So much for my childhood crush.
