Steve Orlando's run of Supergirl comes to a close and while I haven't given it the greatest of scores, I have liked the last bunch of issues a lot more than the start of the series.  Orlando certainly has a whole lot to tie up in this last issue so I'm going to jump right into it.  Was it any good?  Let's find out...

The issue starts with Bones and Mokkari heading off to the Blade before getting rudely interrupted.  We have to get back to that as we head off to Supergirl who is getting Ben (and the reader) up to speed on what everyone has been up to.  Undercover investigating, activated blood that gathers intel...you know, stuff!

We then see Shay Veritas and get the tension for the issue...she is hooked up to the Psycho-Redactor and if she isn't saved quickly, her memory will be wiped.  I not only wondered who was telling Shay all the info since we left Bones and Mokkari in their destroyed car, but also why they just didn't flip the switch right then and there.  Silly villains, am I right?!?

That's when we see that Bones and Mokkari were attacked by Turid Goldenaxe (???) and if it wasn't for Supergirl, would have gone down right here.  A free for all then erupts between Turid, Supergirl and Bones before heading back to the Blade.  Cameron Chase makes quick work of freeing Shay, they go off to expose Bones' wrongdoings at the D.E.O.

Back with Supergirl, we get a lot of nonsense dialogue from Turid, see Ben is uploading something to all the major news outlets around the DCU and watch Bones attack Mokkari. After more Turid nonsense, we see that Bones' crimes are out in the open and THEN he decides to call in D.E.O. backup. Really, all hell is breaking out at this point between just about everyone until help arrives in...NEON?!?!?!?!?!?!  I honestly have no idea what is going on in this issue.

Okay, we finally get some information in an editor's note: Neon and Turid are going to be in Steve Orlando's upcoming The Unexpected book.  What????  I really want to punch the wall right now.  Steve Orlando had the gall to use his final issue of Supergirl to push his New Age of Heroes book but didn't have the skill to do it in any way that wasn't complete horseshit!!!

The issue then ends just to end and Orlando gives us the Supergirl speech that we get in every issue.  By the way, someone tell Steve that Kara's dad is dead!!!

This was one of the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever read.  There was no real resolution and while the art was great, everything else sucked!!!

Bits and Pieces:

Steve Orlando uses his final issue of Supergirl to push his upcoming New Age of Heroes book and while that's The Unexpected, this is just unforgivable.  While the issue looks great, I have never been madder at an issue of a comic in a long time, maybe never.  I haven't been the biggest fan of Steve Orlando, but I am now done with him completely!

2.5/10

  1. My personal opinion is that you guys have continually undergraded Supergirl Rebirth and nitpicked on the smallest things while letting huge errors in core lore go unnoticed in other comics. I always attributed that to for some reason you decided to hate Steve Orlando one day and then just couldn't shake it, because it was too much fun being grumpy about everything. This is the first time I truly agree with your assessment of the comic. Plugging his next comic in this way was total BS, because it didn't fit into the story at all, and he basically sidelined Supergirl in the last issue of her own comic in a complete BS fight, while Cameron and Lar-on got front and center stage. It's unforgivable and sure, give it a 2.5. This is not how you respect the fans who have been supporting you.

    1. You are the first person who says we let huge errors in other comics go!!! That would mean you are suggesting we are positive!

What happened in this comic was ridiculous, but I think it is a thing with Steve Orlando. Right now he is ending his JLA run by forcing his AHL god from Milk Wars into the main continuity. He is constantly grabbing characters from the past and inserting them into his book with what usually seems like minimal knowledge of them.

I know a lot of people like this run of Supergirl, but go back and reread it and tell me that he doesn't throw a whole lot of nonsense in the story and then ends with Supergirl saying "I thought I was teaching you, but you really were teaching me" and wants to make everything ok.

The best part of this series (IMO) was Kara's interaction with Ben and the Danvers and he kept dangling it along and then ran out of time.

This wasn't me least favorite book in Rebirth, that went to Orlando's JLA, but I think he let everyone down in the end.

  2. I wouldn't be so hard on Orlando with this issue. I suspect Bendis wanted total control over Super-titles and Orlando was forced to abruptly end his run.

    1. So end it by not tying up your run and use it to push your new age book? Dan jurgens and Peter Tomasi certainly got pushed aside more with superman and action, yet finished their tins with really good issues.
